NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Baseball (25-13, 11-7 Big West) fought back to tie Cal State Fullerton (26-13, 17-4 Big West) in the eighth but the Titans scored twice in extra innings to take the weekend series with a 4-2 decision on Sunday at Matador Field. Thomas Bainton gave the Matadors seven strong innings on the mound, allowing two runs on two hits to go with five strikeouts.
The Matadors would have to fight from behind for most of the afternoon on Sunday. The Titans picked up a one-out RBI single from Nate Nankil to go in front 1-0 in the top of the first. Bainton retired the next six batters before Fullerton struck again with a single tally in the top of the third on a Maddox Latta sacrifice fly.
After stranding two runners in the third, Bainton would silence the Titan bats over the next four innings. The right hander pitched 1-2-3 frames in the fourth, sixth and seventh innings as he completed a stretch retiring 14 of 15 batters.
The Matadors were held hitless through the first four innings before finally breaking through in the fifth against starter Evan Yates. Nathan Barraza started out the frame with a leadoff double. After a Shunsuke Sakaino sacrifice bunt, Mason Le put CSUN on the scoreboard with an RBI single. Le though would be quickly erased on a pickoff at first base.
CSUN trailed 2-1 heading to the bottom of the eighth where the Matadors would threaten again. The first two batters were retired but Jakob Simons kept the inning alive with an infield single against the shift to the right side. Andrew Sojka walked to move up Simons to second base then CSUN went to its bench. Ben Griffin would pinch hit and deliver an RBI single to tie the game up at 2-2. CSUN nearly came away with the go ahead run on a Kevin Fitzer grounder to third as the throw to first base momentarily pulled Caden Connor off the bag, however, Fitzer was called out.
Xavier Martinez tossed a shutout eighth and picked up an out in the top of the ninth, but with a runner at second base and less than two outs the Matadors went to the bullpen. Closer Joshua Romero came on to pitch and retired two of the next three batters, stranding two base runners.
CSUN picked up a leadoff single from Ali Camarillo in the ninth but the next three batters were retired in order. The Matadors had another scoring chance in the bottom of the 10th with Simons at second base and two outs, however, Griffin was retired on a grounder.
Romero, who also tossed a shutout 10th, would surrender a two-run homer with two outs to Cole Urman in the top of the 11th for a 4-2 Titan lead.
The Matadors brought the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the 11th but Emanuel Dean was retired on strikes by Jojo Ingrassia to end the game.
GAME NOTES
Ali Camarillo extended his hit streak to eight games after a 1-for-5 day at the plate.
Xavier Martinez tossed 1.1 shutout innings, allowing one hit while Joshua Romero worked 2.2 innings, yielding two runs to go with three strikeouts.
ACCORDING TO COACH EDDIE CORNEJO
"My assessment is that I'm proud of the team overall with how we battled back from yesterday's game. Thomas Bainton had bad news earlier on in the week and we thought we were going to lose him, but I'm really glad he's going to stay with us. I'm really excited and happy about that. I give a lot of credit to our pitching staff who kept us in the ballgame. I still think we need to work a lot on the little things. I'm going to use this type of game and type of series as reference to get practice better and to clean up a lot of fundamentals. There were things we didn't do. I believe, because we had a lot of more issues than they did, in some sense we didn't deserve to win. Those things still need to be cleaned up.
It does build you some confidence that we can put ourselves in a position to win any ballgame. These types of games hurt so much but you can utilize it to make you better."
