CSUN Baseball Makes Weekend Trip to UC San Diego

FULL GAME NOTES
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Baseball (25-13, 11-7 Big West) hits the road this weekend for a three-game series with UC San Diego. The opener is set for Friday at 6 p.m. before continuing on Saturday at 2 p.m. and concluding on Sunday at 1 p.m. All three games will be broadcast on ESPN+.
LAST WEEK'S SERIES
The Matadors hosted first-place Cal State Fullerton this past weekend at Matador Field. CSUN took the opener 11-4 but dropped game two 15-1 and fell in 11 innings in the rubber game 4-2.
Graysen Tarlow led CSUN in the series opener, driving in six runs including a grand slam while Lucas Braun tossed seven quality innings with two runs allowed for his fourth win of the season. It was all Titans in game two with Cal State Fullerton breaking open an 8-1 lead with a seven-run top of the eighth to win going away.
Fullerton led 2-0 in game three of the series before CSUN rallied late. Ben Griffin collected a pinch-hit RBI single in the eighth to square the game at 2-2. After seven quality innings from Thomas Bainton, the tandem of Xavier Martinez and Joshua Romero held the Titans off the scoreboard in the eighth, ninth and 10th innings before Cole Urman hit a game-winning two-run blast in the 11th.
MATADOR HEADLINES
CSUN enters the week in fourth place in The Big West standings with a conference 11-7 record while the Matadors are tied with third-place UC San Diego (14-7) in the loss column. Cal State Fullerton sits atop the league standings with a 17-4 record followed by UC Santa Barbara in second place at 13-5.
With 13 games left in the regular season and the Matadors currently at 25-13 overall on the year, CSUN is a win away from securing its fourth consecutive winning season for the first time in its Division I history.
Joshua Romero was placed on the NCBWA Stopper of the Year Midseason watch list on April 26. One-of-56 student-athletes placed on the list, Romero is 9-for-9 in save opportunities this season to go with a 3.79 ERA and 22 strikeouts. Romero has also made the most appearances of any Matador pitcher this season at 17. The NCBWA annually awards the top relief pitcher in Division I baseball with the Stopper of the Year award in June.
Heading into the week, CSUN leads The Big West in batting (.306) and fielding percentage (.977) while the team is second in runs scored (289), RBI (270), on-base percentage (.401) and slugging percentage (.470). Individually, Jakob Simons is second in the conference in slugging percentage (.694), third in batting average (.358), home runs (11) and stolen bases (10), and fifth in runs scored (37). Lucas Braun is second in the league in innings pitched (66.2) and third in strikeouts (75) while Thomas Bainton is second in wins (5).
SERIES HISTORY
CSUN leads UC San Diego 6-4 in the all-time series. Each side has won series at home over the past two seasons with the Matadors taking two of three games last season at Matador Field. Joey Kramer helped lead the Matadors to a series opening win over the Tritons in 2022 by blasting a walk-off three-run homer in a 3-0 triumph.
The Tritons would win three of four games over CSUN in 2021 capped by a walk-off grand slam in the series finale.
SCOUTING UC SAN DIEGO
The Tritons are 26-16 overall on the season with a 14-7 mark in Big West play. UCSD has won four-straight games after sweeping Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo last weekend and defeating BYU this past Tuesday. The Tritons have gone 20-7 at Triton Ballpark this season including going 9-3 in league play. Prior to the year, UCSD was picked to finish eighth by the league's head coaches. Eric Newman is in his 12th season as head coach of the program.
Patrick Hankworth ranks second in The Big West in on-base percentage (.475) and seventh in batting average (.341). Brandon Larson, who leads the team with eight homers, is third in the conference in RBI (42). On the pitching side, Izaak Martinez is tied for second in the conference in wins (5) while posting four saves and 46 strikeouts. Ryan Forcucci has a team-best 48 strikeouts to go with a 3.40 ERA. UCSD pitching is ranked second in ERA (4.44) and third in strikeouts (380) in The Big West.
