4/8/2023 8:39:00 PM | Men's Volleyball
LONG BEACH, Calif. - One night after extending fourth-ranked Long Beach State to five sets, 15th-ranked CSUN was stifled offensively in a 3-0 loss to the Beach Saturday night at the Walter Pyramid.
With the win, Long Beach sweeps the season series from the Matadors while improving to 18-3 overall and 7-1 in the Big West. The loss, CSUN, eighth straight, drops the Matadors to 12-13 overall and 1-7 in conference play.
KEY STATISTICS
• Kyle Hobus led the Matadors for the second straight night, posting match-highs in both kills (11) and digs (9). Hobus wound up hitting .143 on the night, committing seven hitting errors on 28 swings.
• Lorenzo Bertozzi and Griffin Walters each chipped in six kills with Bertozzi hitting .167 on 18 attacks and Walters hitting .111 while also taking 18 swings. Both Bertozzi and Walters added seven kills while Walters also had a team-high two blocks and CSUN's only ace.
• After the Matadors won the battle at the net on Friday (13-5.5), the Beach turned the tables on Saturday, out-blocking CSUN 11-2.5. After hitting .609 in the final set, Long Beach wound up hitting .366 (38-8-82) for the match while the Matadors overcame a rough start to hit .173 (31-17-81) as a team.
• Clarke Godbold and Sotiris Siapanis led Long Beach with nine kills apiece, Godbold hitting .421 on 19 attacks.
SET 1
After a Long Beach service error pulled the Matadors within 3-2 in the early going, the hosts put together a 5-1 run to open up an 8-3 lead when Simon Torwie stuffed a CSUN attack. The lead swelled to six at 10-4 forcing a Matador timeout. CSUN still trailed by six at 13-7 when the Matadors used a Beach service error, a co-block by Walters and Jano Tello and a Donovan Constable kill to cut the lead in half. But six straight Long Beach points all but sealed the set as the hosts opened up a 19-10 advantage. A kill by Hobus followed by a Long Beach hitting error got the Matadors as close as five at 22-17 and CSUN would get as close as four (23-19) before dropping the set, 25-19.
SET 2
The Matadors, who hit .033 as a team in the opening set, picked up their offense a bit in the second set. After Long Beach claimed four of the opening five points of the set, CSUN rallied to tie the score at 5-5 following a Bertozzi kill. The teams traded sideouts for the next several points before a Long Beach service error and a Tello kill gave CSUN its first lead of the night at 10-9. A Hobus kill kept the Matadors in front 14-13 before Long Beach scored two straight to take a 15-14 lead into the media timeout. The set remaining tied at 16-16 when a Godbold kill fueled a 4-0 Long Beach run that opened up a 20-16 lead. A Long Beach service error coming out of a CSUN timeout cut the lead to two but the Matadors would score just once more in the set as the Beach closed the set on a 5-1 run to take a 25-18 win.
SET 3
Both teams would hit well in the final set as the Matadors hit .364 but Long Beach would hit .609 to take a 25-16 decision. After a Hobus kill pulled CSUN within three at 8-5, the Beach would outscore the Matadors 6-2 over the next eight points to open up a 14-7 cushion. CSUN would get back within five at 18-13 following another Hobus kill but the hosts would pull away down the stretch for the 25-16 win.Â
