NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Baseball (28-16, 14-9 Big West) dropped the middle game of its weekend series to UC Irvine (32-15, 13-10 Big West) 10-2 on Saturday at Matador Field. Three Matadors had two-hit games including Graysen Tarlow who drove in one of the team's two runs. UCI scored multiple times in four innings while Michael Stanford slowed down the Matador offense with seven-plus innings of quality work on the mound.
The Anteaters jumped on the Matadors in the opening frame. Two of the first three batters reached on a singles to start before Dub Gleed drove in a run on a fielder's choice.
CSUN offense was stymied throughout the day due to stingy pitching and defense from the Anteaters. In the second inning, Ali Camarillo reached on a bunt single but Jakob Simons lined into a 5-3 double play with a scorcher to the hot corner. The twin killing began a stretch where Stanford retired six-straight Matadors, aided by strong defensive plays on the infield.
UCI got back into the scoring column in the third inning, taking advantage of a CSUN miscue. After loading the bases with one out, Gleed hit into what appeared would be a double play but the ball was mishandled at short, leading to a run scoring. Thomas McCaffrey made it a 3-0 lead moments later on a fielder's choice.
The Matadors' best chance to score early came in the fourth when Tarlow and Kevin Fitzer picked up two-out singles. However, Stanford sat down Camarillo on a flyout to maintain the lead. Stanford would retire the side in order in bottom of the fifth, pick up a timely 4-6-3 double play in the sixth and pitch around a two-out single in the seventh inning.
Gleed would add to the Anteater lead with a two-run blast in the fifth inning. UCI leaned on the long ball again in the top of the seventh on a three-run blast from Anthony Martinez for an 8-0 lead.
CSUN committed another costly error in the top of the eighth as an errant throwing throw on a potential inning-ending double play allowed two unearned runs to come across to score.
The Matadors finally broke up the shutout in the eighth. Joey Kramer and Brandon Leon opened up the frame on singles then Nathan Barraza worked a walk to load the bases. Shunsuke Sakaino drove in CSUN's first run on a fielder's choice before Tarlow hit an RBI single to cut the deficit to 10-2. CSUN would load the bases with two outs but Camarillo lined out to second base to end the frame.
Stanford was lifted from the game with one out in the eighth while Tanner Brooks recorded the final five outs to secure an Anteater victory.
GAME NOTES
Thomas Bainton worked 6.1 innings, allowing eight runs with seven earned. Ryan Wentz worked the final 2.2 innings, surrendering a pair of unearned runs to go with four strikeouts.
Kevin Fitzer notched his 16th multiple-hit game of the season, finishing 2-for-4 on the day. Ali Camarillo, who also went 2-for-4, extended his on-base streak to 14 games.
ACCORDING TO COACH EDDIE CORNEJO
"I told [the team] sometimes you have to tip your cap and we have to learn how to compete with guys that are on dial-a-pitch like [Stanford] was. We were pressing. We were feeling pressure to always get a hit and that has never worked for this team. The message is we need to bounce back. We have been punched in the mouth and the only way to bounce back is to learn from today. If we don't learn from today or we're stuck in our frustration then we won't overcome it."
