LA JOLLA, Calif.---CSUN Baseball (27-14, 13-8 Big West) belted four home runs and posted a three-hit shutout in an 11-0 triumph at UC San Diego (27-18, 15-9 Big West) on Sunday afternoon at Triton Ballpark. Jon Mocherman tossed a season-high 6.1 innings and struck out five batters to earn his second win of the season. Five Matadors had multiple-hit games led by Ali Camarillo and Shunsuke Sakaino who had three-hit efforts.
The Matadors scored seven times including hitting two homers all with two outs in the seventh inning en route to clinching the series win.
CSUN jumped on the Tritons early in the ballgame, plating single tallies in the first and second inning. Sakaino led off the game with a single before eventually moving up to second on a stolen base and to third on a passed ball. Graysen Tarlow would safety squeeze Sakaino in from third base for a CSUN 1-0 lead. The Matadors went ahead 2-0 in the second inning after Kevin Fitzer tripled and later scored on a Nathan Barraza groundout.
Mocherman gave the Matadors perhaps his strongest outing of the season. Early in the game, Mocherman received an outstanding defensive play from Jakob Simons in center field. Simons would chase down a Matt Halbach drive in the gap in right-center field with a dive before getting back up in time to double up Michael Fuhrman at first base. Simons' catch started a string where Mocherman retired 12 of 13 batters.Â
The Tritons threatened in the fifth inning when Jalen Smith reached on an error with two outs. A single from Emiliano Gonzalez kept the inning alive but Mocherman retired Luke Glascoe on a liner to short to end the inning. Mocherman then retired four of the next five batters before exiting the game with one out in the seventh.
Meanwhile, the Matadors opened up a 3-0 lead on a solo home run from Camarillo in the fourth. CSUN led by three until two outs in the seventh inning when the bats came alive. A Simons double began the rally as Mason Le followed with a two-run home run. After Sakaino and Brandon Leon singled, Tarlow reached on a strikeout-wild pitch which scored another run. Camarillo singled in CSUN's seventh run of the day then Fitzer delivered the big blow, a three-run home run to push the lead to 10-0.
After the seven-run outburst, Simons added to the lead with a solo home run in the eighth for an 11-0 advantage.
The Matador trio of Hayden Cody, Kenji Pallares and Brayden Hiraki combined to toss the final 2.2 innings, allowing just one walk.
GAME NOTES
The Matadors secured their fifth series win in seven tries in Big West play this season. CSUN outscored UC San Diego 25-6 in the three games while Matador pitching combined to post a 1.27 ERA.
Ali Camarillo extended his hit streak to 11 games, one short of his season high of 12 set earlier this season. Jakob Simons notched his team-high 16th multiple-hit game of the season.
In addition to Shunsuke Sakaino and Ali Camarillo, the group of Kevin Fitzer, Jakob Simons and Mason Le had two-hit games.
ACCORDING TO COACH EDDIE CORNEJO
"I'm proud of the bounce-back we had after a tough extra-inning loss on Friday. What set the tone for both Saturday and Sunday was our starting pitchers. Jon Mocherman followed up Thomas Bainton's performance with one of his own which gave the offense room to chip away. It started with manufacturing runs early and that's the identity we need to continue to have."
UP NEXT
CSUN returns home for the start of a seven-game homestand to close the home portion of its schedule. The Matadors host Pepperdine on Tuesday afternoon at 3 p.m. Ghizal Hasan has the call on ESPN+ and GoMatadors.com/Radio.
