Matadors Host Pepperdine in Final Midweek of the Season

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Baseball (27-14) wraps up the non-conference portion of its schedule with its final midweek game against Pepperdine on Tuesday at Matador Field. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. Ghizal Hasan has the call on ESPN+ and GoMatadors.com/Radio.
PROBABLE PITCHING MATCHUP

LAST WEEK'S SERIES
The Matadors picked up a road series win at UC San Diego this past weekend. CSUN dropped the opener 5-4 in 11 innings to open the series but bounced back with a 10-1 win in game two and a 11-0 victory in the rubber game.
CSUN outscored UCSD 25-6 in the three games and collected six total home runs including four in the finale. Ali Camarillo hit an even .500 in the series (7-of-14) at the plate to go with five runs scored, four RBI and a home run. Mason Le belted two homers in the series and led the way with six RBI while Kevin Fitzer had a home run and five RBI. Jakob Simons notched his team-best 12th home run in the finale.
On the pitching side, the staff posted a 1.27 ERA in the three games. Thomas Bainton improved to 6-1 on the season after working a season-high 7.1 innings with one unearned run allowed to go with seven strikeouts. Jon Mocherman also picked up a win as he tossed a personal-high 6.1 innings and scattered four hits with no runs allowed.
MATADOR HEADLINES
CSUN opens a seven-game homestand when it takes on Pepperdine on Tuesday afternoon. This weekend, the Matadors welcome visiting UC Irvine for a three-game series starting Friday before wrapping up their home schedule with a weekend series with Hawai'i next week. The 2023 regular season will wrap up with a road series at CSU Bakersfield from May 25-27.
The Matadors enter the week in fourth place in The Big West standings and four full games back of first-place Cal State Fullerton (17-4). UC Santa Barbara is in second place with a 15-6 record followed by UC San Diego (15-9) which is a half-game ahead of CSUN for third place. UC Irvine is in fifth place with a 12-9 record.
Over the weekend, CSUN clinched its fourth consecutive winning season for the first time in its Division I history. The team had previously had three consecutive winning campaigns from 1991-93 and 1996-98. Going back to its Division II era (prior to 1991), CSUN's program record for consecutive winning seasons was 10 set from 1967-76.
In The Big West rankings, the Matadors are first in batting average (.304) while they are ranked second in runs (314), RBI (294), slugging percentage (.473), on-base percentage (.396) and stolen bases (58). Individually, Ali Camarillo is fourth in the league in batting (.350) followed by Jakob Simons in fifth (.349). Simons is also first in home runs (12), second in slugging percentage (.692) and third in runs (41) and on-base percentage (.454). On the pitching side, Joshua Romero is first in saves (9) while Thomas Bainton is second in wins (6) and Lucas Braun is third in strikeouts (81).

Pepperdine leads CSUN in the all-time series 48-47-2. The Matadors have won three of four games from the Waves this season including going 2-1 at Matador Field. The teams split a two-game series in Northridge in February before the Matadors claimed an 8-3 victory in Malibu on March 13. CSUN would clinch the season series with a 5-4 win on March 20 at Matador Field. Three of the teams' four games this season have been decided by one run.

The Waves are 17-25 on the season with a 7-14 mark in West Coast Conference play. Pepperdine did not compete last weekend and have been off since May 3. In last week's action, the Waves knocked off Cal Poly (4-3) and Hawai'i (11-4) in midweek games. The team is currently eighth in the WCC standings. Head coach Rick Hirtensteiner is in his eighth season as head coach of the program.
Jack Basseer leads the Waves in batting average at a .333 clip to go with three home runs and 29 RBI. Quintt Landis (.310) and Charles Masino (.306) are also hitting above the .300 mark on the year. Ryan Johnson paces the team with 16 home runs and 40 RBI while batting .296. Bobby Christy earns the start against CSUN on Tuesday as he comes in with a 1-0 record, 6.10 ERA and 13 strikeouts in 38.1 innings of work.
