Complete ABCA/Rawlings All-Region Teams
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Baseball's right-handed pitcher Joshua Romero and outfielder Jakob Simons were both placed on the ABCA/Rawlings All-West Region Team on Tuesday, as voted by members of the American Baseball Coaches Association. Romero received a spot on the first team while Simons earned second-team accolades.

An Oxnard native, Romero would re-write the team history books in his first season with the Matadors in 2023. Romero served as the team's closer for the entire year, notching a school-record 13 saves and surpassing Conner O'Neil's previous record of 12 saves set in 2015. CSUN's closer converted on all of his save opportunities and led The Big West in the category. Romero appeared in a team-high 23 games on the mound, posting a 3.23 ERA and 31 strikeouts in 27.1 innings of work. He also limited the opposition to just a .211 batting average for the year.
Romero, who collected All-Big West Second Team honors, converted on nine saves against league opponents in 2023. He also posted a 3.31 ERA and 15 strikeouts during the conference season.

Originally from Pleasanton, Simons became the second Matador in team history and the first in 21 seasons to be named Big West Field Player of the Year. Simons, who shared the Player of the Year award with UC Irvine's Caden Kendle, would also collect All-Big West First Team honors in leading the Matadors in a host of offensive categories. In 48 games, Simons led The Big West in OPS (1.115) while he finished second in slugging percentage (.665), tied for third in homers (14), fourth in batting average (.356), on-base percentage (.450) and runs scored (51), fifth in stolen bases (11) and seventh in RBI (48) and base hits (67). Simons' 51 runs scored this season were also the most by a Matador in 13 seasons. On the defensive end, Simons posted another perfect fielding percentage and racked up a pair of outfield assists.
Simons powered the Matadors' offense throughout Big West play as well, slashing ..350/.441/.650 to go with eight homers and 30 RBI.
The two all-region selections are the most for the Matadors since the 2002 season when the team produced three.
Under the direction of first-year head baseball coach Eddie Cornejo, CSUN recorded its most wins (34) and best Big West finish in 21 seasons in 2023. The Matadors finished tied for second place with the Big West's automatic NCAA Tournament qualifier Cal State Fullerton and came mere tiebreaker away from securing an NCAA postseason berth.
