CSUN Falls 4-0 at No. 5 Portland

PORTLAND, Ore.— No. 5 Portland defeated CSUN 4-0 Thursday night in men's soccer action at Merlo Field in the Clive Charles Soccer Complex.
COACH DAVILA'S COMMENTS
CSUN appeared to have tied the match in the 35th minute when Bryan Bustamante headed in a Zack Harris freekick, but the Matadors were whistled for offsides on the play. Portland took a 2-0 lead into halftime after Babalai recorded his second goal on a penalty kick in the 40th minute.
Buba Fofanah redirected a Kevin Bonilla pass in front of the CSUN net to increase the Pilots' lead to 3-0 in the 70th minute. Portland increased the lead to 4-0 in the 75th minute as Micaah Garnette put back a Sebastian Nava shot on which Wenzel made the initial save.
Portland outshot CSUN 13-7. Each team took five shots on goal. Portland took four corner kicks, compared to three for the Matadors. Kash Oladapo made five saves for the Pilots as he picked up the win.

NOTES
- The Pilots began the week ranked fifth in the United Soccer Coaches Top 25, seventh in the College Soccer News Top 30, and eighth in the Top Drawer Soccer Top 25 this week.
- Wenzel started his 30th consecutive match in goal for CSUN against Portland. Returning to 2021, Wenzel played 2,675 straight minutes for the Matadors before giving way to Merrick Cook with 15 remaining in the second half against the Pilots.
- Thursday was the fifth meeting between CSUN and Portland. The Pilots lead the series 3-2. Portland improved to 5-1 on the year as the Pilots won their 15th consecutive home game.
- Portland is the highest-ranked team the Matadors have played against since CSUN defeated No. 7/9 Washington 3-1 on Sept. 12, 2019.
- After tonight's match, CSUN is 22-27-10 against nationally ranked opponents since the 2005 season.
