RIVERSIDE, Calif.---CSUN Women's Soccer earned a point in the Big West standings with a 2-2 draw against UC Riverside on Sunday at UCR Soccer Stadium. Yoshi Rubalcava hit her team-leading fifth goal of the season while Sunny Bowlin-Stacy netted her first goal as a Matador. CSUN battled back from an early deficit and took a lead deep into the match, but the Highlanders found the equalizer to help secure a draw.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Highlanders put a shot on frame in the sixth minute of action, forcing a save from CSUN goalkeeper Riley Liebsack. CSUN gained its first corner kick in the 11th minute and later picked up a shot on goal from Cailey Jackson, which was saved by Allee Grashoff. After 14 minutes of action, the Matadors committed a costly foul in their own box, leading to a penalty shot for UCR. Marieke Ten Brink took the penalty and struck the net to give the Highlanders the early edge. CSUN would battle back with the equalizer in the 27th minute. Sami Kolin helped set up the scoring chance with a steal on UCR's side of the field. Jordyn Canister sent a pass to Kolin who then fired a pass to Rubalcaba at the top of the box. A high arching shot from Rubalcava dented the net to even the match at 1-1.

CSUN finished the first half with three shots on goal over the final six-plus minutes with UCR's Grashoff picking up saves on each attempt. Canister missed wide right on a late attempt in the 44th minute as the score remained tied at intermission.
The Matadors' attack continued to pressure the Highlanders with Kayden Perigo and Jackson putting shots on frame. Later in the second half, the Matadors drew a foul in the Highlanders' box leading to a penalty kick opportunity. Bowlin-Stacy was called upon to take the penalty shot and calmly delivered to put the Matadors on top 2-1 with 20 minutes left to play.
The Highlanders though responded just five minutes later with the equalizer on a strike from Sanaa Guyness on the right side. Liebsack was able to tap the high shot attempt but could not secure a save. CSUN looked for the game winner down the stretch, picking up a Rubalcaba shot that went wide left. Perigo had CSUN's last look of the night in the 88th minute, but her shot was stopped by Grashoff.
NOTES OF THE GAME
ACCORDING TO COACH GINA BREWER
"I'm happy with how the team competed tonight. It was a back and forth game, but I'm proud of the resilience and the ability to be more dangerous in the attack. We are excited with our progress and already looking forward to Thursday's game."
