CSUN Wraps Up Highlander Invitational Highlighted by Standout Performances

RIVERSIDE, Calif.---CSUN Cross Country completed their final tuneup before the Big West Championship with a solid showing at the Highlander Invitational on Saturday. The men's team finished sixth on the day and the women's team placed 14th at the event.
Camilo Torres paced the men's team for a fourth consecutive meet, finishing in the top-20 for the third time this season while Ami Jacobson led the women's team for a third-straight race.
MEN'S TEAM
In the men's 8k race, Torres earned the Matadors 12th-place points and finished 16th overall out of 259 total runners at the Highlander Invitational. Torres ran a time of 24:37.6 to lead CSUN. Up next, Cesar Cuevas cracked the top-50 overall, posting 35th-place points and a 49th overall finish with a time of 25:19.6. Up next, freshman Thomas Achten continued his string of solid performances with a time of 25:38.3 to earn 47th-place points to finish 67th overall. Ja'Patrick Smith was the next fastest Matador, registering a time of 25:59.9 to finish with 64th-place points (98th overall).Â
The rest of the Matador field included Kai Smith who ran a time of 26:08.8 for 68th-place points (108th overall). Freshman Darrick Jacob ran a personal record time of 26:14.4 to register 71st-place points (115th overall) followed by Ramiro Mateos at 26:15.3 to post 72nd-place points (116th overall). Another freshman Alec Flores set a PR with a time of 26:46.7 (144th overall) while freshman Diego Rodriguez charted a time of 26:58.0 (157th overall).
The CSUN men's team finished in the top-10 for the third time in four meets this season, placing eighth out of 20 teams with 226 total points. Arizona won the team race with 65 points while the Wildcats' Gideon Mengich took the individual title with a time of 23:42.8.
WOMEN'S TEAM
Jacobson led the way on the women's side with a time of 22:26.5 to post 44th-place points and a 57th overall finish. Her time set a new personal record in 6k races. Behind Jacobson was Elin Markarin who registered a time of 22:52.1 for 67th-place points to finish 87th overall. Both Sakura Divecchio and Savannah Ganter set personal record times on the day as Divecchio ran a time of 23:12.9 for 84th-place points (112th overall) and Ganter finished with a time of 23:17.2 for 87th-place points (119th overall).
Leann Hamilton recorded a time of 23:47.3, charting 107th-place points (152nd overall) while Emily Ramirez set a PR with a time of 32:31.0 for 161st-place points (256th overall).
The CSUN women took 14th-place in the team race with 389 points out of 24 teams. San Diego State collected the team title with 41 points while UC San Diego's Sylvana Northrop won the individual title with a time of 20:27.7.
ACCORDING TO COACH JASON ZARB-COUSIN
"I was really happy with how we competed. The conditions were not favorable for fast times, so I wanted to see them compete. Our men made up 18 points maintaining eighth place throughout the race and the women moved up five places as a team to finish 14th, making up 158 points. Despite the course being slow today, we had four women in Amy Jacobson, Sakura Divecchio, Savannah Ganter and Emily Ramirez running personal best times for 6k and Darrick Jacob, Alec Flores and Diego Gutierrez running personal bests for 8k on the men's side."

CSUN will make its return to UC Riverside's UCR Ag Ops Course in two weeks to compete at the 2024 Big West Cross Country Championships on Saturday, Oct. 2. The men's 8k race will open the championship at 8:30 a.m. followed by the women's 6k race at 9:15 a.m.
