CSUN Cross Country Embarks on 2024 Big West Championships on Saturday

NORTHRIDGE, Calif---CSUN Cross Country will compete at the 2024 Big West Championships at the Agriculture Operations Course in Riverside on Saturday. The men's 8k begins at 8:30 a.m. and the women's 6k starts at 9:15 a.m.

CSUN will send nine men's student-athletes, which include Thomas Achten, Cesar Cuevas, Alec Flores, Darrick Jacob, Jr., Ramiro Mateos, Diego Rodriguez, Ja'Patrick Smith, Kai Smith and Camilo Torres.

On the women's team, the Matadors will have the group of Sakura Divecchio, Savannah Ganter, Leann Hamilton, Ami Jacobson and Elin Markarian competing at the championships.

LAST TIME OUTÂ
The Matadors completed in their final meet before the Big West Championships at The Highlander Invitational on Saturday Oct. 19. The men's team finished in sixth place and the women's team placed 14th at the meet.Â

Camilo Torres led the men's team for the fourth consecutive meet, finishing in the top 20 for the third time this season. He earned the Matadors 12th-place points and finished 16th overall out of 259 total runners at the Highlander Invitational. Following Torres was Cesar Cuevas who earned 35th-place points with a time of 25:19.6 (49th overall) while freshman Thomas Achten earned 47th-place points with a time of 25:38.3, finishing 67th overall.Â

The CSUN men's team finished in the top-10 for the third time in four meets this season. The Matadors placed eighth out of 20 teams with 226 total points.Â

On the CSUN women's team, Jacobson placed the highest for the third-straight meet with a new PR time in the 6k of 22:26.5 with 44th-place points to finish 57th overall. Up next, Elin Markarin recorded a time of 22:52.1 for 67th-place points (87th overall). New PR times were set for runners Sakura Diveccho and Savannah Ganter. Dieveccho posted a time of 23:12.9 for 84th-place points (112th overall) and Ganter earned a time of 23:17.2 for 87th place-points (119th overall).Â

The CSUN women's team earned 14th place in the team race with 389 points out of 24 teams.Â

A LOOK BACK AT 2023 BIG WEST CHAMPIONSHIPS
CSUN competed at the Blacklake Golf Resort in Nipomo, Calif. for the 2023 Big West Championship. The men's team finished in eighth place while the women's team finished ninth.

Camilo Torres ran a time of 25:28, charting 42nd-place points for the CSUN men's team at the 2023 Big West Championships. Already in 2024, Torres has improved his 8k PR with a mark of 24:25.1, recording the second-best time in school history.

Cesar Cuevas also competed at the 2023 championship on the men's side, earning a time of 26:01.3 with 53-place points to finish 57th overall.Â

For the women's 6k, Elin Markarian ran a time of 22:48.1, recording 50th-place points (52nd overall) while Leann Hamilton posted a time of 24:18.0 to chart 64th-place points (74th overall).
