CSUN Tennis Has Strong Showing at Beach Tennis Fall Tournament

LONG BEACH, Calif.---CSUN collected 16 total victories over a four-day span at the 2024 Beach Fall Tennis Tournament at Rhodes Tennis Center from Oct. 3-6.
The weekend would be highlighted by a semifinal finish by the doubles team of Yuliia Zhytelna and Angela Ho. The tandem played in a field of 32 to start before making it all the way to the final four on Saturday. The Beach Fall Tennis Tournament featured nine Big West schools competing.
THURSDAY'S MATCHES
Zhytelna and Ho opened up the doubles Main Draw Tournament with a victory over the Hawai'i tandem of Peppi Ramstedt and Emma Forgac, 8-1. Emma Moratalla Sanz and Tallia Harper also were victorious in their opening round match over Julia Haynes and Katelyn Vu of UC San Diego, 8-5.
In the singles Main Draw Tournament, seven Matadors competed in the field of 64 with four picking up first-round wins. Victoria Santibañez Luna picked up a straight set 6-4, 6-1 win over Nour Khayat of UC Irvine while Ho was a winner over Alliaire Beri of Hawai'i, 6-3, 6-2. Moratalla Sanz notched a three-set victory over Carla Pacot of UC Santa Barbara 7-5, 5-7, 6-1 while Zhytelna capped off the CSUN singles wins with a straight set 6-3, 6-3 triumph over Joelle Lanz of Hawai'i.
In the Round of 32 in singles. Santibañez Luna gave Thea Jangare of Long Beach State a battle before dropping a 1-6, 6-3, 6-1 decision. Moratalla Sanz also dropped a tight decision, falling to Cal State Fullerton's Sein Myoung 6-4, 7-6 (4). Ho would fall 7-5, 6-4 to Cecillia Costa of Long Beach State and Zhytelna lost 6-4, 7-5 to Pamela Badillo of Long Beach State.
FRIDAY'S MATCHES
In doubles tournament action, Zhytelna and Ho continued their winning ways with an 8-4 victory over Alexandra Ozerets and Natalie Lynch from Cal Poly by an 8-4 score. The tandem of Moratalla Sanz and Harper would bow out of the tounament after a tough 8-5 loss to UC Santa Barbara's Raphaelle Leroux and Lucy Lu.
CSUN notched a pair of singles victories in extra matches as well on Friday. Zhytelna registered a thrilling three-set victory over Sarah MacCullum from Cal Poly 6-0, 1-6, 10-6 while Sydney Wilson was a winner in straight sets over Cal State Fullerton's Maria Nikitash 6-4, 6-3.
SATURDAY'S MATCHES
The doubles tournament entered the quarterfinal round on Saturday with Zhytelna and Ho matched up with UC Davis' Isabella Bringas and Solia Valentine. Once again, Zhytelna and Ho were winners as they posted an 8-2 victory to move to the semifinals later on Saturday.
In the final four, Zhytelna and Ho played Makeilah Nepomuceno and Hannah Galindo from Hawai'i. In a tight doubles match, the Hawai'i duo edged CSUN's tandem with an 8-7 (5) victory to advance to the finals.
Saturday was capped by three more singles wins for the Matadors. Harper defeated Daisy Carpenter from Long Beach State in straight sets 6-1, 6-4 while Moratalla Sanz won in three sets over Penelope Wong from UC Davis 6-2, 0-6, 10-3. Zhytelna kept up her winning ways with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Daisy Manunupau of UC Davis to cap the day.
SUNDAY'S MATCHES
CSUN closed the weekend of competition with three additional singles wins over four total matches on Sunday.
Zhytelna collected yet another singles victory, defeating Maily Huynh from UC Irvine 7-5, 6-3. Also victorious was Wilson who outlasted Natalia Lynch from Cal Poly 3-6, 6-1, 10-8 in come-from-behind fashion. Moratalla Sanz notched another win as well on the weekend, beating Kelly Leung from UC San Diego in three sets 7-5, 4-6, 12-10.
POST MATCH COMMENTS
"I think this tournament was a success for us," said Zhytelna. "My first time playing with Angela was such a pleasure and so fun. We definitely got closer to each other through fun wins and painful losses. I'm looking forward to more fun matches with her. Everyone fought so hard. I am so proud of all my teammates. Watching them grow and being their best selves is an amazing experience! Thank you to all coaches and faculty for supporting us!"
"I thought this weekend was exciting and fun, it was my first singles tournament back since my injury and I feel like I played the way I wanted to," said Ho. "Doubles was really enjoyable with Yuliia, we had great matches and our styles worked together."
