NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Men's Soccer rallied from a two-goal deficit to earn a 2-2 draw with UC Davis on Wednesday evening at Matador Soccer Field. Marley Edwards and Jorge Solorzano picked up goals in the match while the Matadors nearly found the game winner with less than five seconds to play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
In a back-and-forth first 20-minutes of action, the Aggies produced five shots while CSUN had two attempts along with two corner kicks. The score though remained 0-0 until the 26th minute when Lucas Fernandez-Kim set up Declan Horio with a goal after a cross to the left side of the box. UC Davis would soon double its lead, capitalizing on a CSUN foul it in its own box in the 35th minute. Cason Goodman took the penalty kick and struck the netting for a 2-0 Aggies advantage.
Despite trailing by a pair, the Matadors continued to battle over the remaining minutes of the first half. CSUN eventually earned a free kick at about the 30-yard mark on the left side in the 43rd minute. Edwards took the free kick and sent a high shot over the outstretch hands of goalkeeper Mekhai Wilson to pull CSUN to within 2-1.
Â
After intermission, the Matadors looked for the equalizer and gained strong looks at the net over the first 19 minutes of the period. Arturo Reveles would miss wide left on an attempt from the left side while Siddiq Lezzar had a shot blocked and Zack Harris sent a shot high of the neeting. Finally, in the 65th minute, the Matadors scored the game-tying strike on a well-executed play from Harris and Solorzano. Harris set up play by faking his defender then sending a lob pass to a streaking Solorzano on the left wing. Solorzano coraled the pass and finished on a left-footed tapper to even the game at 2-2.
Â
With the game squared, the teams traded shots with the each side nearly coming away with the the go-ahead goal. For UC Davis, Cole Pond missed high of the net in the 74th minute while Keegan Walwyn-Bent was just off target on successive strikes near the 75th minute. On the flip side, Michael Blevins almost put the game way with a two heart-stopping shots late in the match. In the 87th minute, Blevins made a long drive up the right side of the field before sending a low shot that was just tapped off target by the defense. In another close call, Blevins had a good look from the right wing with less than five seconds left but had his close-range shot saved by Wilson out of bounds.
NOTES OF THE GAME
ACCORDING TO COACH TERRY DAVILA
"We had resiliency to come back and fight against a very tough team. Their record doesn't really mimic what they're doing. They were at one point in the top 25, so they're a hell of a ball club and we knew it was going to be a dog fight. I'm very happy with the team and how they responded the whole game. Even when we got down 2-0, I thought the game was ours. We played well."
