CSUN Drops Road Contest, 74-52 at San Diego

SAN DIEGO, Calif -- CSUN women's basketball came up short against the University of San Diego Toreros 74-52 Saturday afternoon at Jenny Craig Pavilion. Erica Adams led all CSUN scorers with 15 points. Freshman Kayla Hopson added a career-high 13 points, shattering her previous high of six.

HOW IT HAPPENED:Â
CSUN came out of the gates firing against the Toreros. After USD opened up an early 13-7 lead with three minutes left in the quarter, senior Erica Adams led the Matadors as CSUN went on a 9-0. Adams, who had five points in the quarter, had an impressive and-one driving layup with 2:42 left to cut the lead to three at 13-10 after the free throw. Kelly Tumlin scored a layup and Alondra Lizama added four points of her own including a layup with 56 seconds remaining as the Matadors ended the quarter with a three-point lead at 16-13.

In the second quarter, the Matadors would stretch their biggest lead of the day to five at 18-13 thanks to another and-one bucket for Adams. After she hit a free throw with 8:54 left, the senior had eight in the contest. After trailing 18-13, USD began to turn on the jets as the Toreros went on a 22-2 run before a Kayla Hopson three-point bucket at the 2:17 mark ended the run. San Diego would lead by as many as 10 points with 2:17 remaining in the half. After another Hopson bucket, USD would end the quarter on a Kylie Hortsmeyer floating jumper, which bumped the Toreros lead to 41-26 heading into the break.Â

2ND HALF
The third began with both teams trading buckets, including a tough layup finish by Jenna Kilty at the 8:47 mark to cut the lead to 11Â at 41-30. After that layup though, USD would go on an 8-0 run thanks to a Truitt Reilly bucket with 5:44 left to go, as the Toreros bumped the lead to 19.

CSUN would end the 19-0 run thanks to a Kilty layup with 39 seconds left to go in the third. The Toreros would head into the fourth quarter with a 28-point lead at 60-32. Turnovers were the story for the Matadors as CSUN had 23 of them going into the last period.

San Diego began the fourth quarter on a 7-0 run but CSUN would show fight after the run. Adams hit a corner three and Hopson drove in for a layup with 5:24 left to keep the deficit at 30, 67-37.

CSUN would go on to have its highest-scoring quarter in the fourth period as the Matadors cut into the Torero lead. After USD increased its lead to 71-39, the Matadors would go on its biggest run since the first quarter, a 9-0 scoring run capped off by a Morgan Edwards layup which trimmed the lead to 23 with 1:43 left. Adams would get her third assist on the Edwards bucket. With 36 seconds left, Adams drove in for a layup to give the senior 15 points on the night. The final read 74-52 in favor of the Toreros despite CSUN out-scoring San Diego 20-14 in the final period.

CSUN returns home next week as the Matadors will take on the Idaho Vandals on Saturday, Dec. 21 at 2:30 p.m. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+ with Jill Painter-Lopez on the call.

- Adams eclipsed her season high in points with 15. Her previous high was 12 against La Sierra on Nov. 4.
- Marshall scored a career-high 13 points on 50% shooting. It is the freshman's first double-digit scoring game while also going a perfect 4-4 from the free throw line.
- The Matadors were once again solid from the charity stripe, going 9-10 as a team.
- CSUN outscored San Diego 20-14 in the fourth quarter as the Matadors shot 40% in the fourth.
