CSUN Men Second, Women Eighth After Day One of MPSF Championships

SPOKANE, Wash. - CSUN track & field opened the MPSF Indoor Championships Sunday at The Podium as the Matador men are second while the Matador women are eighth after day one.
With six men's and women's events scoring on day one, the Matador men posted 48 points behind event wins from David Phillps, Jr. and Trey Knight. CSUN also had a standout performance from Chase Mars who broke the CSUN record in the 60m prelims. The CSUN women scored 12 points, receiving scoring performances from Kaliyah Poston in the 200m, Katherine Shipp-Davis in the weight throw, and the distance medley relay.Â
MEN
Phillips led the CSUN men on the track, winning the 200m in a personal-best time of 20.78, just ahead of Mars who was second also clocking a personal-best of 20.80. James Crawford ran 21.13 to finish fourth and Tosh Black was ninth in a personal-best 21.68 giving CSUN a total of 22 points in the event.Â
Mars and Phillips were also spectacular in the 60m prelims, with Mars breaking the CSUN record in a time of 6.61. Mars had the fastest qualifying time in the field, just ahead of Phillips who was second in a personal-best 6.67. Phillips time is the third fastest 60m time CSUN indoor history. Crawford also advanced to Monday's event final, clocking a personal-best of 6.71 to qualify fourth. Black also posted a personal-best 6.90 to place 11th.
In the distance medley relay final, CSUN finished fifth as the relay squad of Noah Contreras, Chris Pitts, Atticus Hall, and Camilo Torres ran a time of 10:15.68 to earn four points.
In field event finals on Sunday, Knight continued his impressive indoor season by winning the weight throw with a personal-best mark of 23.52m (77-2). Joseph Alipranti also finished in the top five, placing fourth with a personal-best 17.19m (56-4.75). Two other Matadors finished in the top-10 as Elijah Ignacio was seventh at 15.69m (51-5.75) and Guillermo Lopez was 10th with a best throw of 11.79m (38-8.25).
In the long jump final, Dillon Peters posted a season-best mark of 7.19m (23-7.25) to finish third, earning CSUN an additional six points. Bryson Williams was fifth with a best leap pf 7.12m (23-4.50) to earn two points while Jonrich Dela Cruz posted a season-best 6.79m (22-3.50) to place 12th.
WOMEN
In Sunday's one event final on the track, Poston ran a personal-best 24.25 in the 200m to place sixth (3 pts), followed by Jada Reese who was 10th in a season-best 24.64. In Sunday prelims, Arianna Alexander clocked a season-best of 7.44 in the 60m to finish second in qualifying to advance to Monday's final. Poston also qualified sixth in 7.49. Charis Wondercheck clocked a personal-best 8.80 in the 60m hurdles prelims but did not advance to the final.
In the distance medley relay final, CSUN's Leann Hamilton, Jayden Lopes, Rachael Simpson, and Nicole Contreras clocked a 11:54.05 to finish fifth, earning four points for the Matadors.
Brianna Kelpis recorded 3,482 points to finish in sixth place in the pentathlon while earning three more points for CSUN. Among the five events she competed in, Kelpis finished in first place in the shot put with a toss of 12.63m (41-5.25). Audrie Reuss just missed the top eight in the pentathlon as she finished in ninth place at 3,276 points.
Shipp-Davis posted a personal-best 16.62m (54-6.50) to finish seventh in the weight throw to add two points to CSUN's total.Â

"We had a great day today. The team came out with great energy and performed at a high level. We walked away from day one with three new school records and too many personal bests to list.
