HOW IT HAPPENED
- Behind Hobus and Salvador, the Matadors got off to a good start, taking the opening set 25-20. After a Donovan Constable ace gave CSUN an early 4-2 lead, the Matadors would go on a 10-7 run to open up a 14-9 lead. CSUN maintained a five-point lead at 19-14 when the hosts rallied back to within three at 22-19. But a Hobus kill fueled a set-clinching 3-1 run to close the set.

- After limiting UCSD to a .000 hitting clip in the opening set, the Matadors had trouble stopping the Tritons who hit over .400 in the final three sets. In the second set, neither team led by more than two points until the final margin. Down 22-20, the Matadors used a pair of Hobus kills to knot the score at 22-22. But a CSUN service error, followed by a Matador hitting error, and a UCSD block sent the hosts to the 25-22 win.
- The third set was all UCSD as the Tritons led 8-4 early before an 11-6 run opened up a 19-10 advantage. UCSD would extend the lead to double digits at 21-11 before closing out a 25-12 win.
- After a Bertozzi kill gave CSUN a 1-0 lead in the final set, the Matadors would not lead again. Kills from Hobus and Bertozzi kept CSUN within one at 10-9, when the Tritons outscored the Matadors 8-4 over the next 13 points to lead 18-13. Another Bertozzi capped a 7-2 CSUN run that pulled the Matadors within two at 22-20 before UCSD claimed three of the final five points in a 25-22 win.
