CSUN Finishes 1-2 on Day One of Big West Challenge

UC DAVIS 4, CSUN 1
In Friday's opener against UC Davis, the Matadors posted a dominating win in the No. 2 pair but dropped the other four pairs and fell to the Aggies for sixth consecutive time. Lauren Eknoian and Tasha Mae made quick work of Mia Olen and Sam Lazenby, 21-9, 21-12 while two of the other four pairs went three sets, all going to UC Davis.
In the No. 1 pair, Colleen McGuire and Kylie Miller topped Gabriela Griego and MayaMay Brown  by the score of 21-15, 17-21, 15-11. The Aggies also claimed the No. 5 pair as Anna Braun and Kate O'steen held off  Sophia Jarosz and  Haley Coggins in three sets, 21-13, 18-21, 15-13. UC Davis won in straight sets at No. 3 and No. 4 as Morgan Coolbaugh and Kimi Waller topped Maleya Miles and Kinley Lindhardt, 21-13, 21-16 in the 3's and Tabitha Mitchell and Lindsay Heller defeated Julia Bazylevych and Layla Cederlind in the 4's, 21-11, 21-18.

HAWAI'IÂ 5, CSUN 0
Eknoian and Mae nearly pulled out a win in the No. 2 pair, falling in three sets to Kaylee Glagau and Julia Thelle, 21-16, 19-21, 15-6. The Matadors were blanked by the No. 12 BeachBows in the other four pairs as UH remained undefeated (10-0) all-time against the Matadors and have yet to drop a single point in the series
The Matadors switched partners at No. 3, No. 4, and No. 5 as Miles and Cederlind paired up for the first time, falling to Julia Lawrenz and Pani Napoleon (21-19, 21-13). Bazylevych and Lindhardt teams up at No. 4 and dropped a 21-14, 21-14 decision to Riley Wagoner and Sydney Amiatu. The other new pair came in the 5's as Buckley and Haley Coggins fell to Sydney Miller and Anna Maidment, 21-11, 21-17.

CSUN 3, CAL STATE BAKERSFIELD 2
Looking to salvage the finale of a three-match day, CSUN pulled out a 3-2 win over the Roadrunners for its second win in three tries against CSUB this season. Eknoian and Mae completed a 2-1 day with a 23-21, 21-16 won over Megan Gilbert and Olivia Silacci-Jense.Â
Griego and Brown would win for the first time on the day, sweeping Katey Milne and Isabella Almeida, 21-13, 21-11 in the No. 1 pair. Bazylevych and Lindhardt then won for the tirst time as a pair, sweeping Ava Palm and Pearl Moore at the 4's, 21-16, 21-15.
Bakersfield would win the No. 3 and No. 5 pairs behind Vivi Kaelin and Ella Erteltova sweeping Miles and Cederlind, 21-11, 21-13 and Ella Ensign and Kaia Fanshier knocking off Buckley and Coggins, 21-15, 21-18.

COACH ARI HOMAYUNÂ SAID
"I thought today went well. We were super close against Davis. Lauren and Tasha played really well, then we went the distance at the 1s and the 5s. We battled against Hawaii, Lauren and Tasha took their 2s to 3 sets. Overall, a good day for that pair with them winning their last one against CSUB. It got cold and raining in the last match but the girls were tough and they competed. Right back to it tomorrow."
UP NEXT
The Matadors cap the Big West Challenge on Saturday, taking on Long Beach State and Sacramento State at Hornet Beach before traveling back to Davis to meet Cal Poly at 3 p.m.
