NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - The CSUN women's golf team is set to tee off the 2024 Big West Women's Golf Championship on Sunday at Spanish Trail Country Club in Las Vegas. Nine teams will play 54 holes over three days (Apr. 14-16) in a battle for the Big West crown.
The three-day championship tournament will be contested for the second straight year at Spanish Trail Country Club, a 27-hole championship course designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr. The nine teams across The Big West are set to battle for the automatic berth into the 2024 NCAA Division I Women's Golf Championships.
In 2023, Cal Poly claimed a third consecutive title after an impressive final round. After opening the day with just a one-stroke lead, the Mustangs were able to win going away, besting second-place Long Beach State by 11 shots in windy conditions. Beach freshman Jasmine Leovao took home the individual title by three strokes.Â
The Matadors are seeded seventh in the championship and will be paired with No. 8 seed Hawai'i and No. 9 seed Cal State Bakersfield for Sunday's opening round.
Head coach Michelle Winkler's five-player lineup will consist of Nicole Tanoue, Gracie Piar, Kim Turgut, Meghan Paracuelles, and Elle Laur. Freshman Ellie Shirley will be CSUN's alternate.
Piar, Turgut, and Laur are the three players in the CSUN lineup to have previously played in a Big West Championship. Piar finished a team-best 21st in her first championship last season, followed by Laur (24th) and Turgut (28th). Laur also finished 31st at the 2022 Big West Championship at San Luis Obispo Country Club.
Tanoue and Paracuelles, both freshmen, have been CSUN's low scorer in five of nine tournaments this season. Tanoue comes in with a team-leading 74.86 scoring average and four top 10 finishes. Paracuelles, who boasts a 77.32 scoring average, has CSUN's lone win this season, at the Utah Tech Trailblazer Invitational in February.
Piar, a sophomore, also has four top 10 finishes and comes into the championship third on the team with a 75.96 scoring average. Turgut, also a sophomore, ranks second to Tanoue with a 75.89 scoring avearge, and has two top 10's and two top 20 finishes this season.
CSUN, which took home Big West Championships in both 2003 and 2004, is looking to replicate or better its team finish from 2019 when the Matadors finished second to Long Beach State. CSUN also finished as championship runner-up to UC Davis in 2014.
Â
Brianna Steger had CSUN's best finish in recent years, finishing as individual runner-up in 2019 after posting rounds of 69-71-77 to finish at (+1) 217 at Moorpark Country Club. The Matadors have had three players win or tie for the individual championship, Beth Allen in 2003 and 2004 and Clariss Guce in 2014.
