NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN's Trey Knight added another accolade to his already historic first year with the Matadors by earning Big West Field Athlete of the Year honors on Friday, the conference office announced.
Originally from Ridgefield, Wash., Knight ran away with the hammer title at the 2024 Big West Track & Field Championships on May 11. His toss of 75.10m (246-4) was nearly eight meters farther than second place. During the outdoor season, Knight recorded four first-place finishes in the hammer throw along with a second-place finish.
A two-time Big West Field Athlete of the Week, Knight broke the CSUN school record in the hammer throw twice during the season, with his toss of 76.99m (252-7) on April 20 at the Mt. SAC Relays qualifying him for the 2024 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships West First Round next weekend. In the nation, his hammer throw toss at the Mt. SAC Relays was the second-best this outdoor season.
Knight is the fifth Matador to ever be named Big West Field Athlete of the Year and the first since Lance Gonzales in 2010. Other previous winners include Rolando Felizola (2009), DaShalle Andrews (2007) and Jason Romero (2004).
Earlier this year, Knight was named to the NCAA All-America First Team after finishing second in the weight throw at the 2024 NCAA Indoor Championships. He would also be named MPSF Field Athlete of the Year, winning both the weight throw and shot put titles at the conference championships.
Knight is one of 10 Matadors from the CSUN Men's Track & Field team to qualify for the 2024 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships West First Round at Arkansas' John McDonnell Field from May 22-25. Along with Knight in the hammer throw, other Matadors qualifiers include James Crawford (100m and 200m), Chase Mars (100m and 200m), David Phillips, Jr. (100m and 200m), Dillon Peters (triple jump), Chris Pitts (400m) and Bryson Williams (triple jump). The 4x100 relay team of Tosh Black, Phillips, Crawford, Mars, Shamil Youngblood and De Marq Jaque have also qualified.
