CSUN Suffers 2-1 Loss to Idaho in Home Opener
8/22/2024 2:53:00 PM | Women's Soccer
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Women's Soccer suffered a 2-1 defeat to Idaho in the 2024 home opener on Thursday at Matador Soccer Field. Jackie Victorio scored her first career goal and CSUN's first goal of the season, but Idaho rallied for two-straight goals to pick up the win.
HOW IT HAPPENED
CSUN produced the game's first shot attempt from Cailey Jackson in the third minute of action, however, neither side would record another until the 17th minute. Idaho's Annika Farley nearly found the net on a shot from inside the 18, however, defender Angelica Claiborne made a team save at the net.
The Matadors would take advantage of an Idaho error to finally break the scoreless tie in the 25th minute. After Jordyn Canister kicked the ball into Idaho's box, defender Rebekah Reyes attempted to take possession, but the ball rolled up and made contact with her hand leading to a penalty. Victorio was awarded the penalty kick and calmly found the back of the net for a CSUN 1-0 lead.

The Vandals though responded less than six minutes later. On a drive up the field, Kyla Tucker drove the ball to the right wing and sent a cross through several players in the box. A CSUN defender would get a touch on the ball, but the pass found a wide open Margo Schoesler who right-footed the shot into the net to even the game. Down the stretch of the half, CSUN picked up shots from Canister and Paige Califf but the score remained 1-1 at intermission.
Idaho came out quickly in the second half, producing several shot attempts leading to the go-ahead goal. In the 54th minute, Farley would strike the cross bar, but the ball bounced back in play. Karli Yoshida-Williams was the first to get to the ball and delivered a quick second shot that struck the netting for a 2-1 Idaho lead.
Trailing by one, CSUN could not find the equalizer down the stretch despite a pair of solid looks at the net. Canister would put a shot on goal in the 88th minute from inside 18 yards, but goalkeeper Paula Flores made a two-handed save.
NOTES OF THE GAME
ACCORDING TO COACH GINA BREWER
"We started really well with how we were defending with our pressure from the front. We really worked hard to have good defensive organization and that allowed us to win the ball higher up in the field. Obviously, we earned a penalty kick, we were able to go up 1-0 and score our first goal of the year, so that was fantastic. As the game went on, we started to lose a little bit of our momentum, and we were trying to gain that back. Overall, I'm still happy with the result, even though we didn't get the win. Last year, Idaho came here and beat CSUN 5-1, and this year it was 2-1 with us going up. Still some improvement, we saw a lot of positives and things to work toward to get ready for conference play."
