8/25/2024 10:15:00 PM | Women's Soccer
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Women's Soccer earned its first win of the season with a 2-1 triumph over LMU on Sunday night at Matador Soccer Field. The Matadors picked up first-half goals from Cailey Jackson and Jordyn Canister while goalkeeper Riley Liebsack had four saves in net. CSUN's win is the first under head coach Gina Brewer.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The two sides battled in the early going with only two shots produced in the first 14 minutes of action. The Matadors would break though first in the 15th minute on a drive up the field where Yoshi Rubalcava took a pair od dribbles and sent a shot to Jackson who was in the center of the box. Jackson moved past her defender and deposited a laser that hit off the left post before striking the net for a 1-0 lead.
Â
The Matadors controlled the pace for most of the first half, keeping the Lions out of the frame for nearly the entire 45 minutes. Meanwhile, CSUN continued to go on the attack leading to another scoring chance in the 36th minute. Ashly Torres would set up the play with a long kick over the defense and past a crowd in the box. An open Canister moved her way to the back post and picked up the loose ball before finishing with a tapper past goalkeeper JJ Hoover for the goal. Canister nearly hit another in the 45th minute of action on a drive up the left side, but Hoover prevented any further damage to keep the game at 2-0 heading to halftime.
Â
After CSUN led in shots 5-4 in the first half, the Lions went on the attack in the second period and outshot the Matadors 10-4. Jennessa Groves challenged the defense with a pair of shots that went high from inside the box. Groves would also send a shot wide left in the 73rd minute followed by a shot on goal five minutes later, which was saved by Liebsack. CSUN still maintained a 2-0 edge until the 84th minute before Groves found the net on a second-chance shot attempt at the goal line to cut the Matadors' lead to 2-1.Â
Over the final six-plus minutes, LMU pressured the Matadors defense but could not find the equalizer. Liebsack stopped an attempt from Natalie Oca with three minutes to go while Megan Rucker missed wide right moments later. CSUN's defense held firm in the closing minutes to secure the victory.
NOTES OF THE GAME
ACCORDING TO COACH GINA BREWER
"We've been working really hard with the team and improving every single game. We've challenged them to put together two really good halves and score within the run of play, and they did that. They followed the game plan. They followed exactly what we were asking them to do and created two beautiful goals in the first half. From our last game, we struggled in the second half after putting together a good first half. We asked them if we could put together a full 90 and be consistent. I thought we started a little slow in the second half, but then kicked it up and finished strong to get the win. So, I told them, 'let's remember this feeling, we want a lot more of these where they came from.' We just got to keep believing in ourselves, be confident because we know we're capable of having more wins and success moving forward."
