CSUN Kicks Off Fall Schedule with Successful Weekend at Claremont

CLAREMONT, Calif.---CSUN Women's Tennis kicked off the fall season with 21 total victories during a two-day stay at Claremont-Pomona-Pitzer Invitational from Sept. 13-14.

The Matadors opened the invitational with a perfect singles record on Friday. CSUN knocked off Westmont in nine singles matches to go with a singles win over Biola.

Yuliia Zhytelna positioned in the No. 1 spot for CSUN and collected a straight set 6-2, 6-1 win over Fracesca Aguirre of Westmont. Victoria Santibañez Luna also won in straight sets 6-4, 6-0 while Emma Moratalla Sanz was victorious 6-1, 6-2 and Elena Goodman collected a 6-2, 6-1 win. Freshman Madison Shepperson would also win in straight sets 6-4, 6-0 and Cindy Ung notched a 6-1, 6-2 win to complete the sweep.

In other singles matches, Tallia Harper won 4-0, Vitoria Solis Urdiales posted an 8-1 victory and Sofia Dermenjyan picked up an 8-0 win against Westmont. Sydney Wilson also pulled out a tight singles 4-3 (5) win in a singles contest versus Biola.

CSUN recorded five of six double victories as well on Friday against the Claremont Mudd-Scripps and Pomona-Pitzer. Facing CMS, the Matadors won two of three doubles matches as Santibañez Luna and Angela Ho picked up a 6-0 win and Shepperson and Ung won a thriller 7-6 (5). The Matadors completed a sweep with Goodman and Zhytelna winning 6-4 while the tandems of Santibañez Luna and Ho (6-4) and Shepperson and Ung (6-2) notched a doubles win each.

Saturday's action featured the Matadors taking on Pomona-Pitzer in singles action. CSUN registered six of eight singles wins as Zhytelna notched a win in straight sets 7-5, 7-5. Moratalla Sanz also secured a tight singles victory of 7-6 (5), 7-5. Other CSUN wins included Harper who rallied for a 2-6, 6-1, 11-9 victory. Solis Urdiales won 6-4, 6-2 and Dermenjyan was victorious as well in straight sets 6-1, 6-1. Wilson also played a single set, winning 6-4 in her match to close the day.

POST MATCH COMMENTS
"It feels great to be back in action this weekend," said Zhytelna who is in her senior season. "First matches are always the hardest, but we all did great. Especially today, we had a couple of tough matches, and I was able to finish mine with a W. Happy to be a part of this team one more year!"

"I'm happy that we're all back together and playing," said Harper. "I think the atmosphere these last two days was great, and we all competed and fought really hard. My singles match was tough and I'm proud of myself for finding a way to come back and win. Most of all, I'm grateful to be out here with such an amazing team!"
