NORTHRIDGE, Calif -- CSUN Women's Basketball fell to the UC San Diego Tritons, 82-44, on Saturday afternoon at Premier America Credit Union Arena. Nnenna Orji led all CSUN scorers with 11 points. Erika Aspajo was the second leading scorer for the Matadors with eight points.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
UCSD began the game on a 11-2 run that ended with a Morgan Edwards three-pointer assisted by Aspajo at the 3:48 mark. Both teams traded buckets before the Tritons ended the first quarter on a mini 7-3 run. The three CSUN points in that last run were provided by Edwards who hit her second three of the contest. UCSD ended the first quarter with a 10-point lead at 20-10.
Â
In the second quarter, CSUN began the scoring when Jenna Kilty hit a shot from downtown. Following the basket by Kilty, UCSD went on a 9-0 run to bump up its lead. The Matadors broke the momentum via another Kilty shot from distance, bringing her total to six in just the second quarter. The Tritons followed with another 10-1 run before Orji downed a traditional three-point play when she got fouled on a made layup, bringing the lead to 21 points with 4:20 remaining in the half. UCSD would close the quarter on a made shot from behind the arc and a layup as both teams headed into intermission with the Tritons ahead 46-20.
Â
SECOND HALF
The Tritons kicked off the second quarter on a 10-1 run before Kelly Tumlin hit a shot from the corner three-point line with 5:36 left to play in the period. Tumlin ignited the biggest run of the game for the Matadors, at 14-6 as CSUN kept fighting to try and cut into the Triton lead. The junior from San Ramon was responsible for two shots from distance in the Matadors' streak. UC San Diego though held on to 62-35 edge heading to the fourth quarter.
Â
In the fourth quarter, UCSD began the period on a 14-4 run as the Tritons started to pull away. Freshman Karsen Marshall broke the streak and got her first points off the ballgame from the charity stripe at the 3:06 mark to cut into the deficit. Unfortunately, the Tritons got the better of the Matadors in this one, as UCSD held on and found the win column.
