DAVIS, Calif --- CSUN Women's Basketball fell to the UC Davis Aggies 68-41, on Saturday afternoon at University Credit Union Center. Jenna Kilty led all scorers with 12 points, with all her baskets coming from behind the three-point line. CSUN played great defense in the loss as Morgan Edwards had five steals, while Erica Adams and Erika Aspajo both had four steals.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
A clock malfunction caused the game to be stopped for several minutes right after tip-off before CSUN opened the game on a mini 4-1 run with two made baskets from Aspajo. UC Davis would then follow with an 8-0 run, which ended at the 05:07 mark with a jumper from Adams. Both teams would then go on to play great defense as neither team made a field goal until the 01:33 mark when the Aggies' Ryann Bennett made a three-point basket to stretch UC Davis' lead to seven at 13-6.Â
Â
Kilty would then hit her first three of the game to get the lead to four, 13-9 with 50 seconds remaining in the period. Two made free throws by the Aggies would extend the hosts' lead to 15-9 heading into the second quarter.
Â
In the second quarter, UC Davis went on its largest run of the half at 13-4, capped off with a shot from downtown from the Aggies' leading scorer on the season, Tova Sabel. CSUN would end the run with another three-point shot from Kilty in the same spot she made her first three, this time on a step-back jumper with 3:18 left to play in the half. UC Davis's defense was on point again in the second period, holding CSUN to just eight points in the quarter. CSUN's defense was solid as well, accounting for eight steals in the half. However, UC Davis would take a 33-17 lead into the intermission.
Â
2ND HALF
To start the third, UC Davis continued to build on its lead. After Nnenna Orji hit her first three of the year, the Aggies would counter with an 11-3 run to increase the lead to 45-20. UC Davis shot very well from three in the third, making five out of eight shots from deep. CSUN scored 11 in the third period, nine of those points coming from deep as three different players hit shots from three in Adams, Kilty and Orji. CSUN was outscored 23-11 in the third period.Â
Â
In the fourth quarter, the Matadors would keep fighting. The first four points in the quarter were scored by Edwards as the junior from Los Angeles hit a free throw and a shot from distance to cut CSUN's deficit to 24, at 52-36.. After two free throws from Sabel, Kilty hit another shot from behind the arc, her fourth three pointer of the contest. CSUN outscored UC Davis 13-12 in the fourth period, but ultimately CSUN fell to the Aggies by the score of 68-41.
CSUN stays on the road next week as the Matadors will look to get back in the win column at UC Irvine on Thursday, Jan. 9 at 6:00 p.m. The game will be held at Bren Events Center and will be broadcasted on ESPN+.
