CSUN Falls in Road Bout Against California Baptist

RIVERSIDE, Calif --- CSUN women's basketball (2-2) fell to the California Baptist Lancers 86-54 Wednesday night at the Dale E. and Sarah Ann Fowler Events Center. Nadia Bernard scored a career high 15 points in the defeat. Morgan Edwards scored in double figures as well with 10.

FIRST HALF
The first five minutes of the ballgame was a defensive showcase for both teams. After a three point shot from the Lancers to kick things off, Erika Aspajo answered with a three of her own to tie it at the 8:46 mark. Both teams would trade jumpshots before CBU went on a 7-0 run. CSUN answered with a 4-0 run of their own capped off by a layup from Bernard to make it a 12-9 game with 5:11 remaining in the first. CBU then went on an 8-0 run. CBU ended the quarter with a 12 point lead as the scoreboard read 24-12 after the first quarter.

CBU started to pull away in the second quarter. After two made shots from CBU, a layup from Bernard cut the lead to 14 at the 8:09 mark. CBU then went on a 15-0 run thanks in large part from three straight three-point buckets from Reyleigh Hess, Chance Bucher and Filipa Barros. Two free throws from Rita Nazario ended the Lancers' run. CSUN made four shots from the charity stripe in the quarter as CSUN went into the halftime break trailing 46-20.

SECOND HALF
CSUN kept pace with the home team in the third quarter. The Matadors scored 15 while CBU scored 16. Saray White and Erika Aspajo both had driving layups coming out of the break. Aspajo finished the game with nine points. A three-point jumper from Alondra Lizama at the 5:09 mark cut the lead to 25. After a driving layup by the Lancers, Nazario drained a three-point bucket of her own to make it a 56-32 game with 4:20 remaining in the period.

In the fourth quarter, CSUN kept fighting with its highest scoring quarter of the night at 19. Edwards and Bernard accounted for 18 of the 19 points. Bernard, the transfer from Saint Mary's, was a perfect 4-4 from the field. Edwards drained two shots from distance in the last stages as she shot 75% in the fourth. CSUN shot a higher percentage than the Lancers in the fourth, but ultimately couldn't make up the deficit from the first half.Â

CSUN will travel to Idaho with a matchup against the Vandals on Sunday. Tip-off is slated for 1:00 p.m.
