NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - CSUN Athletics is mourning the passing of former men's golf student-athlete Brad Uptgraft.
Uptgraft, who lettered for the Matador men's golf team from 2002-04, passed away on November 23.
"Brad was a great golfer and just a great human being," said CSUN head coach Jim Bracken. "He was always very team-oriented and was the true example of what it means to be a student-athlete. He was also a success in the business world after his playing days and will be sorely missed by all of us at CSUN."
A local product who prepped at Valencia High School, Uptgraft earned First-Team All-Big West honors as a senior in 2004. That season, he led the Matadors with a 73.16 scoring average while competing in 31 of CSUN's 33 rounds. He fired a CSUN season-low round of 66 in the final round of the 2004 Big West Championship at Tijeras Creek GC to finish third at the championship. He wound up his senior season with seven top-20 finishes, which led the squad.
After transferring to CSUN from College of the Canyons, Uptgraft competed in all 10 tournaments for the Matadors in 2002-03. He finished second to Pete Sisich in scoring average, posting a 75.69 average over 29 rounds. His low round of the season was a 68 in the final round of the Pacific Invitational, where he tied for third place with a score of 207. He went on to finish in a tie for 19th at the 2003 Big West Championship at Serrano GG.
Uptgraft graduated from CSUN in 2004 with a bachelor's degree in psychology and continued his golf career on the amateur circuit. He shot an even-par 70 to finish in a third-place tie at Annandale Golf Course in Pasadena to qualify for the 2019 U.S. Mid-Amateur Championships at Charlotte Country Club in Charlotte, NC.
"Brad wasn't just a teammate — he was the guy who made every round better," said assistant coach James Driscoll, who was a teammate of Uptgraft during both the 2002-03 and 2003-04 seasons. "A genuine friend, a calming presence, and one of the most naturally gifted golfers I've ever played with. He'll be deeply missed."
Brad is survived by his wife, Kat and two sons, Jackson and Charlie.
Services will be held on Dec. 9 at 12 p.m. at St. Kateri Catholic Church in Santa Clarita.
