CSUN Falls to UC Irvine, 72-46 in Saturday Afternoon Matchup
12/6/2025 5:46:00 PM | Women's Basketball
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- CSUN women's basketball (4-4, 1-1 Big West) struggled to find its rhythm offensively and fell behind early in a 72–46 loss to UC Irvine (8-2, 2-0 Big West) on Saturday afternoon at Premier America Credit Union Arena.
Saray White led the Matadors with 10 points and Rita Nazario added nine as CSUN shot 33.3% from the field but was limited to just four points in the second quarter as the Anteaters built a lead they never relinquished.
HOW IT HAPPENED
CSUN opened the game with confidence, taking a 7–2 lead behind early baskets from Jite Gbemuotor and Mariona Cos Morales. But Irvine responded with a 14–2 run to close the first quarter and continued to surge in the second, outscoring the Matadors 21–4 in the frame to take a 37–15 halftime lead.
In the third quarter, the CSUN offense came alive, as the Matadors shot over 42% in the period. UC Irvine came out of the break on a 7-0 run, but CSUN responded with a driving layup from White to end the hot streak. White added another layup and a three pointer to go on a run all by herself, making it a 44-22 game with 3:44 left to play in the third.
CSUN would have its highest scoring quarter at that point by scoring 15 points, but UC Irvine matched the Matadors, as the Anteaters scored 19 of their own in the period. UCI carried a 56-30 lead heading into the final 10 minutes.
After both teams traded points, CSUN went on its best run of the game at the 4:43 mark to the 2:28 mark, as the Matador went on to score 13 to UC Irvine's five, shooting 80% in the process. There just wasn't enough time remaining however, as the Anteaters held strong, getting the win when it was all said and done.
NOTES OF THE GAME
CSUN's next game will be in a week when it hosts San Jose State at Premier America Credit Union Arena on Saturday, December 13 at 2:00 p.m. The game will steam on ESPN+.
