BAKERSFIELD, Calif.---CSUN Women's Basketball had three score in double figures in a 65-51 road win at Cal State Bakersfield on Saturday at the Icardo Center. Kelly Tumlin scored a season-high 19 points while Morgan Edwards added 16 points against her former team. In the middle, Nnenna Orji chipped in with 12 points and seven rebounds and Karsen Marshall finished with nine points, five rebounds and five steals.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After falling behind 7-4 in the early going, the Matadors went on a 7-0 run with made baskets in the paint from Orji and Edwards along with a three from Tumlin. Moments later, Tumlin worked her way into the paint for a layup before the 'Runners responded with back-to-back threes to take a 14-13 lead with 3:52 left in the first quarter. However, it would be the last lead for Bakersfield for the remainder of the contest. After the score was tied at 16-16, Marshall scored the next five points including knocking down a three. Orji closed the first period with a driving layup to put CSUN ahead 23-18 after 10 minutes of action.
Â
CSUN kept Bakersfield off the scoreboard until the 7:31 mark of the second quarter while Tumlin drained a three to extend the lead to 27-20. After Yves Cox made it a 31-22 game near the four-minute mark, the 'Runners clawed back to within five after a traditional 3-point play from Cheyenne Forney. However, CSUN quickly responded with an Edwards drive to the cup along with a pair of late free throws from Orji to take a 37-29 lead to intermission.
The Matadors saw their lead slip to six early in the third period before scoring the next six points with Tumlin draining a three for a 43-31 lead. CSUN would lead by double digits for the remainder of the contest as Edwards and Tumlin hit back-to-back shots for a 48-33 lead with 6:15 left in the third. After Bakersfield pulled to within 48-37, Tumlin completed a traditional 3-point play and Edwards followed with five straight points to close an 8-0 run. CSUN outscored Bakersfield 19-11 in the third quarter to take a 56-40 lead into the final period.
Â
Edwards opened the fourth quarter with a field goal, but CSUN went cold from the field and scoreless for the next six-plus minutes. Melissa Secchiaroli would cap an 8-0 Bakersfield run, cutting the Matador lead to 58-48 with 5:17 remaining. Despite the cold shooting for CSUN, its defense kept Bakersfield at bay as the lead never slipped to single digits. The Matadors made 7-of-8 free throws over the final 2:39 with Tumlin scoring her 18th and 19th points with 1:21 to go to help seal the win.
NOTES OF THE GAME
ACCORDING TO COACH ANGIE NED
"Our focus was scout buy in. We've done a pretty good job of sticking to the scouting report for 20 minutes each game and our goal was to build off that. Let's get to 30 minutes and then 35 minutes. We wanted to apply more pressure defensively to generate early offensive opportunities from our defense.
"Kelly was a great stabilizer for the team both on offensive and defense. She made big time shots when we needed and was a leader on the floor by constantly communicating and covering gaps defensively.
"I am very proud of the team's effort and urgency!"
