CSUN Splits Doubleheader on First Day of Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic
2/20/2025 11:53:00 PM | Softball
CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif -- CSUN Softball split a double-header on Thursday during day one of the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic at Big League Dreams Sports Park. CSUN fell to the Oregon State Beavers in a pitcher's duel, 1-0 in game one. The Matadors were then victorious in game two against BYU, 6-2 in the nightcap.Â
Â
In game one, Lauryn Carranco pitched a complete game, only giving up one run in the bottom of the seventh. She struck out six Beavers in the contest. In game two, Jerzie Liana hit a three-run home run, and Tiara Westbook hit a bases-clearing double with three on to account for the six runs. Isabella Alonso went the distance, allowing two runs and striking out six over seven innings.
Â
GAME ONE VS OREGON STATE
Both teams' pitching were on point to kick off the tournament. In the first inning, both Carranco and the opposing pitcher, Ellie Garcia struck out two out of three batters.
Â
In the top of the second, CSUN threatened to score with two singles out of the first three batters, but a foul out and a fielder's choice stopped the threat.Â
Â
In the bottom of the second, Oregon State doubled to kick off the inning as the Beavers found themselves with a runner in scoring position with all three outs to work with. It was no sweat off the back of Carranco, however, as she retired the next three batters in order.Â
Â
In the third inning, OSU got a runner in scoring position again with a single and a stolen base, but two straight punchouts by the junior from Clovis got the Matadors out of the inning.
Â
In the fourth, Carranco retired the side in order. In the fifth, she made quick work of the lineup despite allowing a walk with two outs.
Â
Carranco only allowed five hits, but the last one came on a walk-off double. She finished with six strikeouts in the defeat.Â
Â
GAME TWO VS BYU
In the top of the first, Mikayla Carman walked to begin the game. After Alexis Chavez reached on a fielder's choice, Westbrook doubled to left field to get two runners in scoring position with one out.
Â
Liana then had the biggest at-bat of the young season as she smacked a pitch over the left field wall to give CSUN an early 3-0 lead and notched her second collegiate home run.
Â
Both team's bats were silent until Bre Townsend homered to kick off the bottom of the third to cut the Matador lead to two. The Cougars were then retired in order to send the game to the fourth inning with the score 3-1.
Â
In the top of the fourth, with one out, Mackenzie San Pedro tripled to right field past the diving glove of Miranda Mansfield. Carman and Chavez then walked to bring up Westbrook with the bases loaded. The sophomore promptly doubled to left-center with the bases loaded and brought all three runs home. This made it 6-1 in favor of the Matadors.
Â
On the defensive side of the ball, Alonso had three strikeouts through four innings.
Â
In the bottom of the fifth, Alonso got out of a two runners on base situation with a flyout to center field, keeping the Cougar runners at bay.
Â
Ilove'a Brittingham kicked off the bottom of the sixth with a home run to centerfield, cutting the Matador lead to four. However, Alonso made quick work of the next three batters, getting them to strike out, fly out and ground out, in that order.
Â
CSUN wouldn't add anymore, as the Matadors entered the bottom half of the seventh up four with three outs to go. After a leadoff double to kick off the inning, the junior from Cypress retired the next three batters in order to end the game.
Â
NEWS AND NOTES
" I thought today we played two really good games. We had a stellar performance by Lauryn in game one, we just couldn't get any runs across, but I thought overall we played realyy well. I challenged the team to keep that same energy in game two and we did. It was great to see a whole team win. I am proud of them. We have to keep working but now its time to get some rest and get ready for tomorrow."
UP NEXT
A quick turnaround for the Matadors as CSUN continues the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic with another doubleheader tomorrow. CSUN will play San Jose State at 5:30 p.m. and Saint Mary's at 8:00 p.m. at Big League Dreams Sports Park.
