CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif --- CSUN Softball split a doubleheader at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic Friday at Big League Dreams Sports Park. CSUN took the first game in five innings via run rule over San Jose State, 9-1. In the second game, CSUN was defeated by Saint Mary's 14-4 in the nightcap.
Â
Tiara Westbrook and Kylie Galindo each had two RBIs in game one. Lauryn Carranco struck out three and only allowed one run through five innings against the Spartans. In game two, Kaylee Escutia led the Matadors with two RBI's in the defeat.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Game One vs San Jose State
In the first inning, Mikayla Carman kicked things off with a single through the left side. After a sacrifice bunt, Westbrook singled up the middle to put two runners on and one out. The next batter, Jerzie Liana singled through the left side, scoring Carman and sending Westbook to third.
Â
Gizella Vargas Sandoval was then hit by a pitch, setting the bases loaded for Galindo. Galindo promptly singled through the left side, scoring two runners and making it 3-0 in favor of the Matadors.
Â
The next batter, Alexa Landeros singled to right field, loading the bases yet again, this time for Larissa Flores. Flores didn't have to take the bat off her shoulder to make an impact. The next two runners scored on wild pitches.
Â
Flores walked. After Raegan Jackson struck out, Carman batted again and during her plate appearance, another run scored on a wild pitch. Six runs scored for the Matadors and it was only the first inning.
Â
Carranco retired the side in order in the first two innings. She amassed two strikeouts in that time span. In fact, she only allowed one walk with no hits in the first four innings, adding to her already impressive start to 2025.
Â
In the bottom of the fourth, CSUN added to its lead. Carman singled to center to begin the inning. The next batter, Westbrook hit a long drive to centerfield and over the fence to give the Matadors an 8-0 lead.
Â
In the top of the fifth, SJSU got its first hit and its first run. The Spartans tallied three hits, and their last hit came with a runner in scoring position. This ended up scoring the only run for SJSU to make it an 8-1 ballgame.
Â
In the bottom of the fifth, CSUN ended the game via run rule. Landeros doubled down the left-field line and Jackson brought her home with a single to the left-center gap, ending the contest at 9-1.
Â
Game Two vs Saint Mary's
Alonso struck out the first two batters she faced. Also, after allowing a walk to the third hole hitter, she made quick work on the cleanup batter, getting her to popup to second base on the first pitch she saw.
Â
CSUN threatened to score in the bottom half of the first with the bases loaded and two out. However, the Matadors couldn't capitalize and the game remained scoreless through one.
Â
In the second the Gaels struck first. After Mia Zabat singled to the pitcher, Tori Cervant doubled to left center to give Saint Mary's the early 1-0 lead. Two batters later, Cervant tried to steal third. On the throw to third the ball got past Padilla, scoring the second run for Saint Mary's. The next batter singled, bringing Sam Buckley to the plate with a runner on base. Buckley then hit a two-run home run over the right field fence and the Gaels put up a four spot in the second..
Â
In the top of the third, Elisa Gulfin took over in the circle. After a lead-off batter reached, a quick 1-6-3 double play cleared the bases. A ground out to third made quick work of the Gaels in the third.
Â
In the CSUN half of the third, after two groundouts, Liana doubled to left-center. Galindo brought her home with a single to left field to put the Matadors on the board with a run scored. The score was 4-1 entering the fourth.
Â
Saint Mary's got the run back in the fourth. Kiah Silva scored on a fielder's choice as the Gaels once again led by four, this time 5-1.
Â
Flash forward to the fifth, Camile Lara singled to center and advanced to third on an error. Lara then was scored by Alex Cutonil, making it a 6-1 ballgame.
Â
After two consecutive batters reached on errors, Zabat singled to center and scored two more runs to make it 8-1. In the top of the sixth, the Gaels added another thanks to a triple and a sacrifice fly, making it 9-1.
Â
In the bottom of the sixth, Galindo singled to begin the inning. After Jizzell Ruiz pinch ran, Escutia doubled to right center and scored Ruiz, making it 9-2 as CSUN tried to chip away.
Â
Saint Mary's went on to add to its lead and the Gaels closed out the game.
Â
NEWS AND NOTES
"I think we started off great in game one. I am really proud of the way we came out. In game two we got to come up with ways to respond when we get down. We got to be better all around. There's no excuses, we didn't play well. However, we got a quick turnaround because we play at noon tomorrow. We'll keep plugging away and keep making adjustments."
