CSUN Turned Back by UC Davis in Big West Play, 66-45

NORTHRIDGE, Calif -- CSUN Women's Basketball was defeated by the UC Davis Aggies, 66-45, Saturday afternoon at Premier America Credit Union Arena. Nnenna Orji led all CSUN scorers with 11 points. The graduate student from Rancho Cucamonga also had a double-double as she tallied 10 rebounds in the defeat. Erika Aspajo had a near double-double with nine points and 10 rebounds.

HOW IT HAPPENED
UC Davis began the game on a mini 5-0 run before Orji swished two free-throws to make it 5-2 at the 7:26 mark. The Aggies countered with a 12-0 run before Kelly Tumlin drained a three-point bucket with 4:11 left to play in the period. The Tumlin basket was the beginning of a Matador 7-0 run capped off by an Yves Cox layup at the 2:17 mark. The Aggies ended the quarter on an 8-2 run to bring the score to 25-11.

In the second quarter, Cox led off the scoring with a cutting layup. After Davis responded with a bucket of its own, CSUN went on a mini 5-2 run capped off by a Jenna Kilty free-throw make. Kilty and UC Davis would then trade three-point shots at the 5:22 mark to get the score to 32-21 in favor of Davis.

UCD went on a 6-1 run before Kilty drained another shot from distance, making it 38-25 with 1:26 remaining in the half. Nya Epps of the Aggies responded with a three of her own as the score was 41-25 heading into intermission.

2ND HALF
Both teams played good defense as there were no baskets scored in the first two minutes coming out of the break. CSUN held UC Davis to its lowest scoring quarter in third, only allowing 13 points. The Aggies though began the third on an 8-0 run, but CSUN responded. The Matadors tallied a 9-3 run to end the quarter. Orji and Laini Dahlin accounted for eight of those nine points. The scoreboard read 52-34 entering the fourth.

In the fourth quarter, Kayla Hopson got her first points of the game on a driving layup. UC Davis then went on a 7-0 run before Aspajo made a layup on a putback rebound. Both teams then traded three-point shots as Aspajo hit one from the top of the key with 5:11 remaining to make the score 62-41. The lead was too much to overcome as CSUN ran out of time to catch up, giving UC Davis the victory.
CSUN hits the road next week for a matchup against UC San Diego on Thursday, Feb. 27 at 7:00 p.m. The game will be live-streamed on ESPN+.
