CSUN kept pace with the eighth-ranked Anteaters in the first quarter. UCI struck first on a goal from Lauren Hett, but the Matadors drew a five-meter penalty, which was scored by Telek to even the match at 1-1. The Anteaters though went on a 3-0 run with Hett capping the run on a five-meter penalty. Over the final two-plus minutes, CSUN drew exclusions and took advantage of the 6-on-5 opportunities. Helena Sandhagen found the net at the 2:15 mark and Sofia Martinez followed with a goal of her own to trim the lead to 4-3 through eight minutes.
The second quarter though belonged to the Anteaters. Hett opened up the scoring in the period while Madi O'Hara added back-to-back goals of her own. Four other UCI players would score soon after as the Anteaters outscored the Matadors 7-0 in the quarter.
In the second half, UCI opened up with a goal from Kennedy East before the Matadors ended the run with a five-meter penalty goal from Telek with 5:53 left in the third period. The tally was the lone goal for CSUN, however, as the Anteaters added four more goals to close the period with a 16-4 lead. The Matadors would get back-to-back goals to start the final quarter from Telek and Pal but could not draw closer down the stretch.
NOTES OF THE GAME
"We came out and played a strong first quarter but after their depth outshined our depth. There were positives throughout the game, but we need to be more consistent against high level competition."
