NORTHRIDGE, Calif -- CSUN Softball won 5-4 in extra innings against Long Beach State on Saturday afternoon. Jerzie Liana hit a walk-off sacrifice fly that scored Tiara Westbrook to give CSUN the win in the game and the series at Matador Diamond. Liana led the Matadors with three runs batted in, while Kylie Galindo and Alexis Chavez each had three hits.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Â
After a scoreless top half of the first inning, CSUN led off the bottom half with two consecutive singles and a walk to load the bases for Galindo. Galindo then hit a fly ball to score the first run of the game on a sacrifice fly. Liana followed suit with another sacrifice fly to bring home the second run of the game. CSUN ended the inning with a 2-0 run lead.
Â
The score would remain 2-0 until the top of the fourth. The Beach added three runs in the fourth, on the strength of three singles, a double, and an error. Long Beach would lead 3-2 after three and a half.
Â
Flash forward to the top of the sixth, with the Matadors still trailing 3-2, Tiara Westbrook started off the inning being hit by a pitch. Jizzell Ruiz pinch ran for Westbrook. Galindo then singled to right field, and Ruiz tried to score from first on an error by the second baseman, however she was thrown out at home. Galindo advanced to third. Liana then doubled down the left field line, scoring Galindo and tying the game at 3-3.
Â
Alexis Chavez then singled advancing Liana to third. CSUN had runners on the corners with the go-ahead run at third base with one out. CSUN however, couldn't bring the runner home as the score remained 3-3 heading into the seventh.
Â
In the top of the eighth, Long Beach State added a run to the board when Savannah Magadan homered over the centerfield wall to make it 4-3.Â
Â
In the bottom of the eighth, Galindo doubled to right field to start a rally with one out. After a pop out to third base and CSUN down to its final strike, Alexis Chavez singled to right field to knock in the tying run.
Â
The score would remain 4-4 until the bottom of the 10th when Westbrook singled to left field to start the inning. Galindo then doubled to right field, her third hit of the day as Westbrook moved to third. It then fell into the hands of Liana who promptly hit a fly ball that was just deep enough to score Westbrook with the winning run.
NEWS AND NOTES
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH CHARLOTTE MORGAN
"It was a dogfight. I told them that Long Beach is a good team and they are veterans at winning. I brought them together and told them we trained for this. We worked a lot this offseason, and on the mental side as well. We have to keep our emotions constant and not on a roller coaster. We were able to come up big. Whole team win today. I want to shout out Jerzie's mom, we are so proud of her and this win is for you."
