NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---No. 23 CSUN Water Polo notched its first Big West win of the season with a 12-6 victory over Cal State Fullerton on Saturday at Matador Pool. Dorottya Telek and Sofia Martinez had four goals each on the day while Erika Staine racked up eight saves in front of the cage.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Neither side could break the scoring column for the first four-plus minutes of the game until Fullerton took advantage of a 6-on-5 chance to take a 1-0 lead at the 3:37 mark of the first period. CSUN quickly answered with a goal two consecutive goals from Martinez to take the lead. Telek would close the first period with a late goal putting CSUN ahead 3-1 through eight minutes of action.
The Titans though battled back with tallies from Destiny Hernandez and Emme Doube-MacLeod to even the match at 3-3. Despite seeing multiple defenders most of the afternoon, Telek broke through for two straight goals as CSUN took a 5-3 lead at the three-minute mark of the first half. A Fullerton tally cut the lead to one, but Martinez completed the hat trick with 39 seconds left in the half to put CUSN ahead 6-4.
Former Matador Lacey Hall opened the third period with a goal for Fullerton, trimming the lead to one, however, that would be the closest the Titans would get the rest of the way. CSUN took advantage of a Fullerton exclusion to strike again with Anna Pal scoring while Telek hit her fourth of the match at the five-minute mark. Freshman Mackenzie Wood closed a 3-0 Matador scoring run that extended the lead to 9-5. The Titans picked up a goal from Taylor Mason with 2:36 left in the third quarter, but CSUN answered with Martinez's fourth goal of the day to take a 10-6 lead to the fourth period.
In the final stanza, the Matador defense held the Titans scoreless over the last eight minutes while adding two more tallies from Tatum Scarry and Mackenzie Wood to help secure the victory.
NOTES OF THE GAME
ACCORDING TO COACH MATT WARSHAW
"Big West games are hard to win and today we got one. After somewhat of a slow start, it was great to see us make some in-game adjustments and then our defense really took over in the second half. Holding a talented Fullerton team to six total goals shows what we are capable of. Big week ahead as we honor a special senior class with our last home game of the year against UCSD."
