NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – The seventh-ranked CSUN men's volleyball team had its season-high, eight-match winning streak halted in a straight-set loss (25-22, 25-15, 25-20) to top-ranked Long Beach State as both teams opened Big West play Wednesday night at Premier America Credit Union Arena.
The Matadors (13-3, 0-1 Big West) were led by redshirt sophomore Jalen Phillips and senior Lorenzo Bertozzi who each had a team-high 12 kills with Phillips hitting .391 on 23 swings. Bertozzi also hit well, connecting at a .381 clip on 21 attacks while freshman Stilian Delibosov added five kills on 10 swings to hit .400.
Senior setter Donovan Constable had a solid all-around match with 31 assists, three aces, three digs, and one block. CSUN hit .288 (33-14-66) as a team but had trouble containing the Beach attack as Long Beach committed just three hitting errors while hitting .522 (38-3-67) in the win.
S1 - LBSU 25, CSUN 22 – After the visitors took an early 5-3 lead, CSUN answered with a 7-2 run to open up a 10-7 lead while forcing a Beach timeout. Constable had two of his three aces during the run while Phillips added a solo block. Long Beach then used a 4-1 run to knot the score at 11-11. The score remained tied at 15-15, when the Beach scored three straight to force a Matador timeout. The Long Beach lead swelled to four (21-17) before a kill and an ace from Phillips pulled CSUN within 22-20. But the Matadors would get no closer as Long Beach took the set, 25-22.
S2 - LBSU 25, CSUN 15 – The Beach claimed six of the first eight points of the second set and would lead by as many as six (10-4) when Bertozzi's attack went long. A Long Beach kill forced a Matador timeout at 12-5 before a Bertozzi ace brought CSUN back within five at 13-8. The Beach would answer with a 6-2 run as the lead grew to 19-10. Long Beach wound up out-hitting CSUN .600 to .143 in taking a 25-15 win.
S3 – LBSU 25, CSUN 20 - The final set was tied at 8-8 when three straight Long Beach points forced a Matador timeout. A Phillips kill kept the margin at two (11-9) when the Beach put together an 8-5 run that opened up a 19-14 advantage while forcing the final Matador timeout. Still down five at 24-19, a Phillips kill saved one set point before a CSUN service error on match point gave Long Beach its 15th consecutive win.
