GAME NOTES
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Baseball opens a four-game homestand this Tuesday against Portland at Robert J. Hiegert Field. First pitch is set for 4:05 p.m. on ESPN+ with Ghizal Hasan on the call.
FOR STARTERS
The Matadors will play four games this week, all of which against non-conference opponents. After Tuesday's midweek game with the Pilots, the Matadors will host sixth-ranked Oregon State in a three-game series beginning Thursday night. Tuesday's game with Portland is the fifth midweek game for CSUN this season as the Matadors come in with a 2-2 record in such games.
ABOUT LAST WEEKEND
CSUN dropped a road series at UC San Diego this past weekend, falling two of three times. The Matadors would earn a 7-3 win in the series opener on Friday behind a complete game from sophomore Ryan Halamicek who allowed three runs and struck out seven while Andrew Gauna homered twice and drove in three runs. Halamicek's complete game was the first of his CSUN career and the first by a Matador pitcher since Blaine Traxel in 2022. In game two on Saturday, CSUN took a one-run lead to the eighth inning but could not hold off a late Triton charge in a 9-5 loss. In the game, Diego Gutierrez gave CSUN seven strong innings, allowing four runs and earned a no decision. UCSD won the rubber game by a 23-6 score on Sunday as the Tritons racked up 19 hits and scored multiple times in five different innings.
MATADOR LEADERS
A quartet of Matadors top the .300 batting mark with freshman Andrew Becker sporting a team-high .330 batting average to go with 20 runs scored, 17 RBI and one homer. Through 29 games, Becker has hit safely in 21 contests and produced a team-best 12 multi-hit games. In Big West games, Becker is also hitting a robust .354 at the plate. Senior Roberto Gonzalez leads CSUN with 15 walks, six stolen bases, a .533 slugging percentage and a .447 on-base percentage on the year. Gonzalez has also homered three times and driven in 16 runs. The tandem of junior Cameron Calvillo (.306) and redshirt freshman Kyle Panganiban (.304) are also batting above .300 this season. Panganiban tops CSUN in hits (38), runs scored (23) and doubles (8) in his first season of competition. Sophomore Matthew Pena remains the CSUN leader in home runs (6) and RBI (20) while he is slugging .487 at the plate.
On the pitching front, junior Diego Gutierrez has struck out a team-high 45 batters to go with a 2-3 record and a 6.08 ERA in nine starts. Sophomore Ryan Halamicek is a close second in the strikeout department with 42 over a team-high 50.2 innings of work.
MEJIA GETS THE CALL
Junior two-way player Tyler Mejia will make his first career start with the Matadors on Tuesday against Portland. Mejia has previously appeared in 10 games this season, working 10.0 innings and racking up nine strikeouts with one save and a 11.70 ERA. At the plate, Mejia has 10 hits, six RBI and a home run in 49 at bats on the year. A transfer from Oregon State, Mejia made just one start last season with the Beavers, coincidentally against Portland where he worked 1.2 innings and allowed a run.
WHO'S HOT?
Senior outfielder Andrew Gauna has begun to his stride at the plate in recent games. Gauna batted .412 last week, totaling seven hits, six RBI and three home runs while slugging .941 at the plate as he has risen his batting average to a season-high .304. At shortstop, sophomore Trent Abel has increased his hit streak to 14 games following a five-hit weekend at UC San Diego. Abel has improved his batting average from .182 before the hit streak to a season-best .352 in 18 total games. Cameron Calvillo comes in with a six-game hit streak along with two homers while Kyle Panganiban has a five-game hit streak including four multi-hit efforts over that span.
SCOUTING PORTLAND
The Pilots are 16-20 overall and sit in second place in the West Coast Conference standings with a 9-3 league mark. Over the past week, Portland fell to Oregon State 10-6 before taking two of three games from Pepperdine. The Pilots won 37 games a year ago and advanced to the WCC Tournament Championship game. Portland leads the WCC in walks with 158 total and ranks second in base hits (328) while sporting a .265 team batting average. Tyler Howard sports a WCC-leading .396 batting average with 17 RBI and 20 runs scored. Other top run producers include Brady Bean who leads the Pilots with 31 RBI while Jonas Salk has a team-high eight homers. Kaden Starr, a right hander, will start on the mound against CSUN as he comes in with a 5.22 ERA and 31 strikeouts over 22.1 total innings.
