CSUN Drops Midweek Contest to Portland

HOW IT HAPPENED
CSUN would dig an early hole in the top of the first inning, as Portland sent 10 hitters to the plate. The first seven Pilots reached base safely with Cole Katayama-Stall hitting a grand slam during that stretch. Following an RBI single from Coleman Hollabaugh and a sacrifice fly from Jace Miller, Portland had a 6-0 edge after the top of the first.
The Matadors responded with a single tally in the bottom of the first when Becker drove in Roberto Gonzalez from third base with a groundball to the right side. The Pilots added another run in the top of the second, capitalizing on a CSUN error to take a 7-1 lead, but the Matadors answered quickly in the home half. After loading the bases with two outs, Trent Abel delivered a two-run single up the middle to trim the deficit to 7-3 through two innings.
Coming into a jam in the first inning, Jason Davis gave CSUN a lift out of the bullpen. The right hander retired all three batters he faced to end the first inning while he allowed an unearned run to score in an otherwise spotless second inning. In the third, Portland managed just a two-out walk before Davis went on to toss another scoreless frame.
After picking up a run in the fourth, the Pilots would break open the game in the fifth behind a six-hit inning. Jonas Salk added to the lead with a two-run single while Zach Toglia picked up a two-run double and Ryan McCarthy singled in another as Portland scored five total runs.
CSUN responded with two-run inning in the home half of the fifth. The inning began with a single from Angel Cortez before the next two batters were retired by pitcher JT Landwehr. However, Becker followed with a two-run homer to right field that cut the deficit to 13-5.
While the Matadors struck for two against Landwehr, the Piliots' pitcher turned things around after the homer. Landwehr went on to toss three scoreless frames, limiting a Matador comeback before exiting the game after the eighth inning.
In the ninth, CSUN forged one last rally as Cameron Calvillo and Jarren Sanderson began the frame with singles. After a wild pitch, Calvillo touched home plate on a sacrifice fly from Xavier Rios. A Cortez walk kept the rally alive, but the next two Matadors were retired in order to end the game.
