HOW IT HAPPENED
CSUN's freshman Max Mendes gave the Matadors a spirited effort in his Thursday night start against the Beavers. Mendes issued a walk to begin the game, but soon picked off the runner at the first base. However, another walk followed by a two-run homer from Gavin Turley put Oregon State ahead 2-0. OSU added another run on three more hits in the inning, but Mendes bounced back to retire Trent Caraway and Jacob Kreig to keep two runners stranded.
Trailing 3-0, the Matadors quickly responded in the home half of the first. The first three batters reached to start the inning with Kyle Panganiban providing a single and Andrew Becker knocking in a run on a double. OSU's Nelson Keljo struck out the next two batters, but the Matadors showed aggression on the base paths leading to another run scoring. On a Trent Abel strike out, a dropped third strike forced a throw to first base while Panganbian used that time to race home and score from third. Moments later, Cameron Calvillo knocked in the tying run with a double down the left-field line.
A Mendes walk in the second inning would proceed another home run, this time by Aiva Arquette to left to put Oregon State back ahead 5-3. From there, Mendes retired two of the next three batters to keep the Matadors within two.
In the third, Mendes sat down two of the first three batters as he looked for a shutout inning. The Beavers though drew two straight walks, knocking Mendes out of the ballgame. Entering the game with the bases loaded and two out, Ignaciak issued a pair of walks to force in two runs. AJ Singer followed with a two-run single to left center to extend to a 9-3 lead.
After the shaky start, Ignaciak soon found his groove on the mound. The right hander ended the third inning with a strikeout, beginning a stretch where he retired seven of nine batters. A pair of shutout frames from Ignaciak gave the Matadors a chance to chip away at the deficit in the fifth inning.
Giving Oregon State a taste of its own medicine, Panganiban and Becker drew walks to open the bottom of the fifth. The next two CSUN batters were retired, but Calvillo worked another walk to load the bases. Sanderson soon reached base as well on a hit by pitch, forcing in Panganiban from third. With the bases still loaded, Matthew Pena came off the bench looking to get CSUN back in the game. A wild pitch allowed Becker to score from third base before Pena blooped in a single to left field, scoring two and cutting the deficit to 9-7.
Kept off the scoreboard since the third inning, Oregon State loaded the bases with nobody out against Ignaciak in the top of the sixth. To his credit, Ignaciak limited the damage by retiring Kreig on a sacrifice fly and inducing an inning-ending 4-6-3 double play.
The Beavers' bats though were too much in the late innings as Oregon State extended its lead over the seventh and eighth. Turley homered for the second time on the night in the seventh while Kreig and Easton Tait came away with RBI doubles in the eighth to stretch the lead to 13-7.
After a four-run outburst in the fifth, the Matador bats were cooled off by reliever Eric Segura who retired 10 straight batters during his stint on the mound. The streak finally ended in the top of the ninth when Roberto Gonzalez was hit by a pitch. Segura went on to retire the next two batters before giving up a single to Andrew Gauna to put runners at the corners. Gonzalez eventually scored on a passed ball, but Segura ended the game with a strikeout of Abel.
NOTES OF THE GAME
- CSUN falls to 8-25 overall while Oregon State improves to 28-7 on the season.
- Ignaciak's 3.1 innings pitched and four strikeouts are new career bests at CSUN.
- Dante Zamudio pitched a shutout top of the ninth for CSUN, scattering a pair of hits.
- Calvillo extended his hit streak to eight games following a 1-for-3 day at the plate.
- Pena now leads the Matadors with 22 RBI on the season.
ACCORDING TO COACH EDDIE CORNEJO
"We came in ready to compete as a whole. There were still some gaps, like Max Mendes needs to be better for that game and Blake Ignaciak needs to be better coming out of the bullpen to work in our favor, but to his credit he turned it around. Our bullpen was able to contain somewhat the game and make it relatively closer. We missed opportunities offensively with runners in scoring position, but we made up for it with quality at bats. There are some good takeaways overall, but we can't just be competitive. We have to be competitive and be able to finish."
