HOW IT HAPPENED
Oregon State would put up runs on the scoreboard in each of the first seven innings on Friday. In the first inning, the Beavers jumped ahead 1-0 on a two-out RBI single from AJ Singer. An inning later, OSU put up another single tally on a two-out hit as Jacob Krieg smacked a solo homer for a 2-0 advantage.
CSUN though had a big response in the bottom of the second. In an inning where they batted around, Andrew Gauna singled and Cameron Calvillo drew a walk to set the table for Sanderson. The sophomore then unloaded a three-run homer to left, giving CSUN a 3-2 lead. The Matadors though were far from done as two straight singles and two walks produced another CSUN run. Kyle Panganiban added to the run total with an RBI single while Andrew Becker capped a six-run outburst with a sacrifice fly.
The Beavers got a run back in the top of the third on a Aiva Arquette solo homer, but Sanderson matched that blast with one of his own in the bottom of the third to put the Matadors on top 7-3.
However, the big bats of Oregon State would be tough to keep at bay throughout the night. In the fourth, Oregon State had its biggest scoring inning of the game with six runs scoring all with two outs. Six of the team's seven hits in the inning came with two outs as Levi Jones hit a two-run double, Easton Talt collected an RBI single and Gavin Turley hit a go-ahead three-run homer.
The Beavers kept on leaning on the long ball with two more blasts coming over the fifth and sixth innings. In the fifth, Trent Caraway smacked a two-run home run to extend the lead to 11-7. Four more scored in the top of the sixth, capped by another Caraway home run, this time a three-run shot that put CSUN in a 15-7 hole.
The Matadors though showed little quit despite the offensive display of the Beavers. Abel got CSUN back on the scoreboard with a leadoff homer in the sixth while Roberto Gonzalez later picked up an RBI double, making it a 15-9 game.
Oregon State scored for the seventh consecutive inning in the top of the seventh to lead 16-9, but the Matadors responded with a run in the eighth when Abel scored on a wild pitch.
CSUN entered the bottom of the ninth trailing 16-10 before mounting one last rally. A Becker walk, a Gauna single and a Angel Cortez walk loaded the bases with nobody out. Sanderson followed by drawing a walk of his own, forcing in a run to make it 16-11. Managing to get the tying run to the on deck circle, the Matadors though could not cash in more runs as OSU's Kellan Oakes struck out the next three batters to end the game.
NOTES OF THE GAME
- CSUN drops to 8-26 overall while Oregon State improves to 29-7.
- Gonzalez finished with a team-high three hits to go with two runs scored and one walk. He also had two bunt hits on the night.
- Gauna also had a multi-hit night, going 2-for-5 with a run scored.
- Abel scored three times while picking up two hits and a home run.
- Sanderson's two homer game is the first of his CSUN career.
- Hayden Hall tossed two innings out of the bullpen, allowing an unearned run on two hits while Jackson Banuelos pitched a shutout ninth.
ACCORDING TO COACH EDDIE CORNEJO
"The overall assessment of the game was yes, we were fighting today, and I'm proud of the guys for that, but this also showed how immature we still are as a team. When they are giving us runs and giving us base runners, we have to be able to take that next step and put the ball in play. We had the ability early on with runners in scoring position with less than two outs and we couldn't put the ball in play. That happened two different times before the ninth, and we get to the ninth with the bases loaded and we still can't put the ball in play. So, with defensive miscues that led to runs, we still have more development to do."
