HOW IT HAPPENED
CSUN would play from behind early in the contest with Oregon State striking for three runs in the first inning. The Beavers loaded the bases with nobody out before a passed ball scored the game's first run. Another walk loaded the bases once more until CSUN's Diego Gutierrez induced 5-4-3 double play off the bat of Canon Reeder with a run scoring on the play. A third run came in moments later on an RBI single from Wilson Weber.
The lead swelled to 5-0 in the second inning after solo home runs from Jacob Krieg and Aiva Arquette, but CSUN had a swift response in the home half of the second inning. CSUN picked up a one-out single from Abel and a two-out walk from Elijah Fairchild, setting the table for three consecutive run-scoring hits. RBI singles from Xavier Rios, Gonzalez and Panganiban cut the Beaver lead to 5-3 through two innings.
The Matadors pulled a run closer on a solo homer from Sanderson in the third, making it a 5-4 game. The Beavers though regained control over the next two frames. A run scored in the fourth on an RBI double from Gavin Turley before Oregon State registered a big five-run outburst in the top of the fifth. Reeder opened the fifth with a solo home run while two of the next three batters reached on singles. Gutierrez picked up a big strikeout of Carson McIntyre for the second out, but Easton Talt drew a walk to load the bases. After a pitching change, Arquette unloaded for a grand slam to left center to extend the lead to 11-4.
Arquette later notched his sixth and seventh RBI of the afternoon in the top of the seventh for a 13-4 lead. CSUN would answer those two runs in the home half after Gauna blasted a two-run homer. In the eighth, CSUN inched closer on an RBI single from Andrew Becker, scoring Gonzalez who singled earlier in the frame.
The Beavers though picked up their fifth home run of the day in the top of the ninth, courtesy of Turley as his two-run shot made it a 15-7 game.
Despite trailing by eight, CSUN showed little quit in the last of the ninth. Sanderson opened the frame with a walk then Abel followed with a two-run homer to left. After an out was made, Cameron Calvillo and Will Linberg picked up hard-hit singles. A third straight single, this time by Gonzalez, drove in CSUN's 10th run of the day. Panganiban then cut the lead to 15-11 on another RBI single to left. With the tying run suddenly in the on deck circle, Becker hit a sacrifice fly to pull CSUN to within 15-12. The Matador rally though came to an end when Wyatt Queen struck out Gauna for the final out.
