HOW IT HAPPENED
CSUN jumped on UC Riverside quickly in the first inning as Gonzalez led off the frame with a triple to center. After a walk drawn by Kyle Panganiban, CSUN had its first run of the night when Will Linberg hit a sacrifice fly. CSUN was from done though. Moments later, Panganiban stole second base and eventually scored on a Gauna RBI single. A Cameron Calvillo walk kept the rally going while Becker followed with a single to load the bases. CSUN picked up another run on a Trent Abel hit by pitch and Matthew Pena capped off the inning with another sacrifice fly for a 4-0 lead.
After a shaky first inning where the Highlanders had two base runners, Mocherman settled in on the mound. The left hander would toss back-to-back 1-2-3 frames over the second and third innings, eventually retiring 10 straight batters. Jacob Badawi broke up that string with a two-out double in the fourth, but Mocherman bounced back to sit down Tyson Reis to end that inning.
Meanwhile, CSUN put up a single tally in the bottom of the third without the benefit of a hit. A Gauna walk began that frame while he went on to steal second and third base in the inning. Becker eventually hit a sacrifice fly for a 5-0 lead.
The Matadors' aggressive play produced three more in the bottom of the fourth. Xavier Rios singled to kick off the inning and would take second on another stolen bag. Panganiban picked up an RBI double in the inning while he took third as well on a stolen base. The Matadors collected a third stolen base in the inning, courtesy of Linberg, who drew a walk. Gauna closed the inning with a two-out double to bring in two runs, extending the lead to 8-0.
UCR threatened in the top of the fifth in what would be Mocherman's last inning of work. Back-to-back walks with two outs brought Andrew Rivas to the plate, but Mocherman induced a grounder to first base for the final out.
CSUN tied its school record for stolen bases in the bottom of the fifth when Becker swiped third base with one out. CSUN would receive a bit hit from Gonzalez in the frame as the senior delivered a three-run homer to right, making it an 11-0 game.
The Matador bullpen would protect the lead after Mocherman departed the game. Out of the 'pen first, Jason Davis gave up a leadoff double in the sixth and a walk to start the seventh but stranded both base runners. The Highlanders looked to break up the shutout in the eighth after picking up a single and a walk with two outs. Davis though got Badawi to bounce to short for the final out. Nicholas Santivanez saw a similar scenario in the top of the ninth with two runners in scoring position and two outs, but he retired Robert Pitts for the final out of the ballgame.
NOTES OF THE GAME
- CSUN improves to 11-29 overall and 7-15 in Big West play while UC Riverside drops to 15-29 overall and 4-18 in conference.
- Mocherman's win was his first since May 26, 2023. He would miss all of the 2024 season and the first two months of the 2025 campaign as he recovered from an injury.
- The nine stolen bases tied the Matador school record established on May 8, 2010 against UC Santa Barbara.
- Gonzalez notched his sixth triple of the season, which is the most by a Matador in a season since Justin Toerner in 2018.
- Gonzalez also belted his fourth homer of the year and extended his on base streak to 13 games.
- Gauna has hit safely in eight straight while Panganiban now has a seven-game hit streak.
ACCORDING TO COACH EDDIE CORNEJO
"I was proud of our offense and proud of Jon Mocherman, especially with the long road he's had with coming off of surgery. That fifth inning was really key for us because we could save Ryan Halamicek for tomorrow or possibly Sunday. For me, Roberto Gonzalez' home run, in my opinion, set us up good for tomorrow."
POST GAME COMMENTS FROM JON MOCHERMAN
"I was just trying to get ahead of batters, get into leverage counts and be able to get outs early. It feels great coming back [from injury], getting some zeroes and having some success. It started off a little rocky, but I feel like I've been able to dial it in recently."
