CSUN Hosts UC Riverside in Weekend Series

GAME NOTES
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Baseball kicks off its penultimate home series of the season this weekend against UC Riverside. The opener is set for Friday at 5:30 p.m. while the series continues on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. and concludes on Sunday at 1 p.m. The final two games of the series will be broadcast on ESPN+ and live audio will be available for all three games at GoMatadors.com/Radio.
FOR STARTERS
CSUN plays six of its next seven games at Robert J. Hiegert Field to conclude the 2025 home schedule. After this weekend's series with UC Riverside, the Matadors make a day trip to San Diego State this Tuesday, May 6 before opening their final home series with Cal Poly next weekend from May 9-11. The final four regular season games will take place on the road at USC on May 13 and at UC Davis from May 15-17.
LAST TIME OUT
The Matadors had their two-game win streak snapped this past Tuesday in an 8-0 loss to USC at Robert J. Hiegert Field. CSUN was shutout for the second time this season and held to just four hits. The Trojans though only led 3-0 until the seventh inning when they scored five runs to blow the game open. On the pitching side, Blake Ignaciak struck out a career-high seven batters as he went a season-long 3.2 innings out of the bullpen. Pitchers Logan Miller and Nicholas Santivanez also had shutout frames in relief.
MATADOR LEADERS
At the top of the order, senior Roberto Gonzalez has moved to the team lead in a host of categories including batting average (.341), runs (29), walks (18), stolen bases (9) and triples (5) to go with three homers, 23 RBI and a .553 slugging percentage. Sophomore Kyle Panganiban remains the team leader in total hits (50), doubles (12) and runs scored (29) while freshman Andrew Becker has a team-high 25 RBI. In the run production department, Andrew Gauna has a team-high seven homers and a .605 slugging percentage with 19 RBI and a .309 batting average.
On the mound, junior Diego Gutierrez has made a team-high 11 starts in his first full season as a starting pitcher. The right hander is also tops in strikeouts with 58 in 60 innings. Ryan Halamicek now sports a team-high three wins this year to go with 50 strikeouts, a new career-high, in 60.2 innings.
WHO'S HOT?
Over the past seven games, Roberto Gonzalez has been especially hot at the plate, hitting at a .448 clip (13-for-29) with eight runs scored and seven RBI. In Big West play, Gonzalez is batting .338 with three homers and 16 total runs scored. At second base, Kyle Panganiban remains the only Matador to start in all 39 games as the freshman is hitting .364 over the last seven games (12-for-23) with one homer, four doubles and seven RBI while he has hit safely in each of those games. Sophomore Matthew Pena has at least one base hit over his last nine Big West games as he has six homers and 23 RBI overall on the season. Over 5.1 innings of work in Big West play, Jon Mocherman has posted a 1.69 ERA with three strikeouts and a .063 average against after making his season debut in early April. Junior Noah Rinehart is coming off a strong series at Long Beach State where he tossed a combined 3.1 shutout innings with five strikeouts.
SCOUTING UC RIVERSIDE
The Highlanders are 15-28 overall along with 4-17 in Big West play. After suffering a three-game sweep to Sacramento State last weekend, UCR bounced back with wins over California Baptist (6-4) and San Diego State (7-6) this week. As a team, the Highlanders are third in the Big West in stolen bases (47) as they hit .249 at the plate as a group. UCR's team leader at the plate, Robert Pitts, leads the Big West in stolen bases with 20 and ranks sixth in hits with 58 while he has 13 doubles, 18 RBI and a season .335 batting average. Manoah Chapman tops the Highlanders with 22 RBi to go with 23 runs scored. On the mound, Joshua Martinez leads the team with 51 strikeouts while Matthew Flores holds a season 3.66 ERA and 3-4 record in nine starts.
Series History: In a series that dates back to the 1959 season, CSUN leads UCR 132-96-1 in 229 all-time meetings. The Matadors would complete a hard-fought three-game sweep of the Highlanders last season in Riverside, winning each game by four runs or fewer. CSUN has won the past 10 meetings from UC Riverside, completing sweeps in each of the past three seasons.
