CSUN Track & Field's Trey Knight Places Second at USATF Championships

EUGENE, Ore.---CSUN Track & Field's Trey Knight rallied to earn silver in the hammer throw at the 2025 Toyota USA Track & Field Outdoor Championships on Thursday at Hayward Field. Knight qualified for the world championships with a personal-best throw on his final attempt of the competition.Â
A native of Ridgefield, Wash., Knight launched a new PR of 78.76m (258-5), which vaulted him into second place in the event. Rudy Winkler, a three-time Olympian, won the event with a toss of 81.47m (267-3).Â
Knight would foul his first two attempts to begin the competition before his third attempt went for 74.56m (244-7) to place eighth and qualify for the final round. His fourth attempt of 75.29m (247-0) moved him into sixth place before he registered a new personal record on his final attempt. His previous PR was 78.15, set on June 15 at the Portland Track Festival.Â
Knight surpassed the world championship qualifying standard of 77.50, earning him a spot on the world championship team. The 2025 World Athletics Championships are scheduled for Sept. 13-21 in Tokyo, Japan.Â
In two seasons with CSUN, Knight won two Big West hammer throw titles and established a school record of 77.91 (255-7) this past March at the Trojan Invitational. He previously was a First-Team All-American in the hammer throw after placing sixth at the 2024 NCAA Outdoor Championships. Knight would compete at the 2024 U.S. Olympic Team Trials as well, taking ninth overall.Â
Knight was also named NCAA West Region Field Athlete of the Year in 2025 following a runner-up performance in the weight throw at the 2025 NCAA Indoor Championships, his second consecutive runner-up finish in the event as a Matador. He holds the CSUN school record in the weight throw with a toss of 24.87m (81-7.25), set at the Nevada Invitational.Â
