CSUN Drops Exhibition Opener to San Diego, 1-0
8/9/2025 10:10:00 PM | Men's Soccer
NORTHRIDGE, Calif -- A goal in the 20th minute by the University of San Diego Toreros was the lone goal needed to defeat the CSUN Matadors in an exhibition Saturday night at Matador Soccer Field. The Matadors had six shots in the first two periods but were unable to find the back of the net in the defeat.Â
Â
The teams played two 45-minute periods and a 30-minute third period.Â
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Tough defense and good goalkeeping was the story in the early going. Good plays by Dorian Drucks en route to three saves kept the Matadors in the game. The difference was a 20th minute goal by USD forward Samy Kanaan in the first period. USD led the way in the shots department as the Toreros had 10 shots to CSUN's six through the first two periods.Â
Â
In the second period, the Matadors played as the aggressors, earning a series of solid looks at the net. Shots by Jorge Solorzano and Eyifehn Forfor proved that CSUN wasn't going down without a fight. Another shot by Solorzano just was wide of the top crossbar as the score remained 1-0. Zion Wagoner had a late second period shot to try and put CSUN level, but it was not meant to be.
In the third period, CSUN had missed shots by Emmanuel Susi and Enrique Pineda as CSUN controlled the ball for most of the minutes trying to get that equalizer.Â
NOTES OF THE GAME
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH TERRY DAVILA
"Everything we worked on, we got a little bit better after today. The things that we haven't worked on, today showed that we have to work on them. You can't expect a perfect game with newcomers on the field, especially since we are figuring out rotations. It's hard to get into a good rhythm in your first time out there. We just have to get in good positions to get our players to be the most successful that they can be."
UP NEXT
CSUN continues its pre-season tuneups with an exhibition contest against the UCLA Bruins, Friday, August 15. Kick-off is slated for 7:30 p.m. at Wallis Annenberg Stadium.Â
