CSUN Drops Non-Conference Finale to Sacramento State, 1-0
9/11/2025 9:35:00 PM | Women's Soccer
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Women's Soccer recorded a season-high 25 shots but could not find the back of the net in a 1-0 defeat to Sacramento State on Thursday evening at Matador Soccer Field. The Hornets scored the game's only goal in 29th minute and withstood a barrage of Matador attacks down the stretch.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Matadors would pressure the Hornets at the start, generating seven shots as well as a corner kick in the first 13-plus minutes of action. Over that span, Cailey Jackson had a quality look in front of the net after Yoshi Rubalcava delivered a corner kick into the box, but Jackson's header was high. Despite the Matador attacks, the Hornets would breakthrough first in the 29th minute on a well-executed drive from Tea Reyes. Driving the ball from the left corner of the field, Reyes dribbled the ball to left corner of the box before striking the far corner of the net. While CSUN added more shot attempts late in the first half, the Matadors still looked up at a 1-0 deficit at the break.Â
The second half would see the Matadors record 13 shots alone with several attempts narrowly missing the net. Siena Navarra and Paige Califf were each just off target with shot attempts while Rubalcava missed wide after another strong attack in the 69th minute. A Califf shot was just high of the crossbar following a set piece and Jackson was wide on a drive that was one on one with the goalkeeper. Jordyn Canister had yet another close call in the 90th minute from about 18 yards, but the ball came inches from reaching the crossbar. CSUN racked up five shots over the last six minutes of action, but the Matadors were unable to find the equalizer.Â
NOTES OF THE GAME
ACCORDING TO COACH GINA BREWER
"It really comes down to technical execution. We talked about needing a 90-minute performance, and at the end of the day, I think there were too many mistakes. We had our opportunities and created chances, but you have to create your own luck by ultimately, playing the game the right away and executing when you have your opportunities. We reset and have a little time before conference starts, so we'll work really hard next week to improve some of the aspects that need to get better and go from there. It's tough, quite a few 1-0 losses, quite a few where we feel we've outperformed the other team, but we're just letting down on that final pass and final execution to put the ball in the back of the net."
UP NEXT
CSUN will be off for nine days before returning to action for the 2025 Big West opener at Cal State Fullerton on Sunday, Sept. 21. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m. on ESPN+.Â
