CSUN's Trey Knight Sets Sights on World Championships

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Track & Field alum Trey Knight is set to represent Team USA in the men's hammer throw at the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Japan this weekend.
The men's hammer throw will begin on Sunday, September 14 at 5:00 p.m. PT (Monday, Sept. 15 at 9 a.m. local time). Coverage of the World Athletics Championships will stream on Peacock. Live results can be found here.
Joining Knight on the USA men's hammer throw team include Rudy Winkler and Daniel Haugh, both former national champions and Olympians.Â
Knight earned a trip to Tokyo after an outstanding performance at the 2025 USA Track & Field Championships in July. He would earn a silver medal in the hammer throw, recording a new PR of 78.76m (258-5). Knight began the competition by fouling his first two attempts before qualifying for the final round on his third throw (74.56m) then moving into sixth place on his fourth throw (75.29m). His sixth and final throw of the meet would be his best of his career, vaulting him into second place and surpassing the world championship qualifying standard.Â
Entering the World Championships, Knight's 78.76m throw ranks as the eighth-best in the world. Winkler is currently holding the second-best throw at 83.16m while Bence Halasz of Hungary is first at 83.18m.Â
A native of Ridgefield, Wash., Knight lettered two seasons with CSUN from 2024-25 after beginning his collegiate career at USC. Knight would post several career firsts as a Matador along with winning three All-American honors. Notably, he finished as the national runner-up in the weight throw at the 2024 and 2025 NCAA Indoor Championships. In the hammer throw, Knight was a first-team All-American, finishing sixth at the 2024 NCAA Outdoor Championships, He would compete at the 2024 U.S. Olympic Team Trials as well, placing ninth overall.Â
In all, Knight won five conference titles in his two seasons with CSUN. He would claim a pair of hammer throw titles at the Big West Outdoor Championships while he took home two weight throw titles and a shot put crown at the MPSF Indoor Championships. No stranger to awards, Knight was named 2025 West Region Field Athlete of the Year for the indoor season while he was a two-time MPSF Male Athlete of the Year and the 2024 Big West Field Athlete of the Year.Â
