CSUN Alum Trey Knight Qualifies for Hammer Throw Finals at World Championships

TOKYO, Japan---CSUN Track & Field alum Trey Knight qualified for the final round in the men's hammer throw on Monday morning inside Japan National Stadium at the 2025 World Athletics Championships. Knight finished 10th overall in the prelim round out of 36 athletes and fourth in his group (18 athletes).Â
Competing out of Group A, Knight recorded his best throw on his third and final attempt, which went for 76.40m (250-6). His next best throw came on his second attempt, reaching 73.13m. World leader in the hammer throw, Bence Halasz of Hungary, was first in Group A with a throw of 78.42m.
Representing Team USA, Knight was one of two Americans to qualify for the finals, as three-time Olympian Rudy Winkler advanced with a throw of 77.46m (254-1) in Group B to place sixth overall. A total of 12 athletes qualified for the final round with Ethan Kahtzberg of Canada placing first with a throw of 81.85m (268-6).Â
Knight earned a trip to Tokyo by earning silver in the hammer throw at the 2025 USA Track & Field Championships last July with a personal-best mark of 78.76m (258-5).
A native of Ridgefield, Wash., Knight is the CSUN record holder in the hammer throw with his toss of 77.91m (255-7), established last March at the Trojan Invitational. He won the hammer throw title at the 2025 Big West Championships while he was named NCAA West Region Field Athlete of the Year during the indoor season. In his two years with CSUN, Knight is a three-time first-team All-American, once in the hammer throw and twice in the weight throw.Â
Knight will compete in the final round of the hammer throw at the World Athletics Championships on Tuesday, Sept. 16 with a start time set for 5:00 a.m. PT (9:00 p.m. local time). Coverage of the event will be broadcast on Peacock.Â
