NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Track & Field alum Trey Knight finished 10th overall in the men's hammer throw final inside Japan National Stadium on Tuesday at the 2025 World Athletics Championships.Â
One of two Americans in the event, Knight would record his best throw on his second attempt, which went for 76.11m (249-8). He concluded round three with a toss of 74.63m, placing 10th in the 12-athlete field. Due to the format of world championships, the top-10 were eligible for a fourth throw, but Knight fouled in the round and was eliminated from a fifth throw.Â
Ethan Katzberg of Canada won the event with a toss of 84.70m (277-11). Also representing Team USA, Rudy Winkler finished the event in the fifth place with a throw of 78.52m.Â
Knight's World Championship appearance was the first of his career along with his first competition outside of North America. He qualified for the men's hammer throw finals after taking ninth place in the prelims on Monday with a toss of 76.40m (250-6), recorded in round three.Â
Originally from Ridgefield, Wash., Knight won silver in the hammer throw at the 2025 USA Track & Field Championships in Eugene with a personal-best mark of 78.76m (258-5). That career best throw came on his sixth and final attempt, earning him a trip to Tokyo and the World Championships.Â
Knight wrapped up his CSUN career this past spring, cementing himself as one of the most decorated Matadors in school history. A three-time first-team All-American at CSUN, Knight was named the 2025 NCAA West Region Field Athlete of the Year during the indoor campaign, which included a second consecutive national runner-up finish in the weight throw at the NCAA Indoor Championships. In 2024, Knight was sixth overall in the hammer throw at the NCAA Outdoor Championships while he placed ninth overall at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials later that season.Â
In the CSUN record book, Knight is the CSUN record holder in the hammer throw with a mark of 77.91m (255-7), established this past March. He also owns the school record in the weight throw at 24.87m (81-7.25).Â
