Offense Breaks Out in CSUN's 4-0 Win at Portland State

HOW IT HAPPENED
Each side traded shot attempts over the first 18 minutes of action until CSUN broke through on a strong drive from Canister. Taking a pass from Paige Callif near midfield, Canister took the ball up the left side, dribbling three times before finding room inside eight yards and finishing passed the defense for a 1-0 lead. Minutes later, CSUN drew a penalty kick on a foul from Liv Frazier, taking down Jackson. A red card would be issued on the play, resulting in Yoshi Rubalcava taking the penalty kick. However, Rubalcava's shot was saved by goalkeeper Natalie Cunningham, keeping the game at 1-0 for the moment. CSUN would still lead by that margin until the 42nd minute when a service from Michelle Monroy led to a scoring chance. Cunningham got a hand on the ball in front of the goal, but on the backdoor, Azar kicked the loose ball over the goal line to extend to a 2-0 lead.Â

After generating 11 shots in the first half, CSUN would surpass that mark with 12 attempts in the second half. CSUN put three shots on frame and had a Jackson shot hit the right post in the first 10 minutes of the second period. Jackson though would find the back of the net moments later in the 56th minute. Siena Navarra set up Jackson on a drive up the field before the CSUN senior created room with a pair of dribbles and sent a laser that struck the right corner netting. The Matadors were not done as another outstanding strike came in the 80th minute, courtesy of Valdez. Cassidy Imperial-Pham would start the play with a tapper to Valdez on the right side. A quick one touch from Valdez reached the far corner of the goal for a 4-0 advantage.Â
