NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Women's Soccer hits the road this week to Portland for a pair of non-conference matches. The Matadors first visit Portland State on Thursday at 6 p.m. before wrapping up the trip at the University of Portland on Sunday at 1 p.m. Both matches will be broadcast on ESPN+.Â
FOR STARTERS
CSUN seeks to snap a four-game skid after falling twice last week. Despite the past few results, CSUN has lost by a combined five goals over the last four matches with the Matadors holding the opposition to one goal twice. The Matadors are on the final stretch of non-conference games before opening Big West play later this month at Cal State Fullerton (Sept. 21). CSUN's last non-conference match is set for Sept. 11 at Matador Soccer Field with the Matadors taking on Sacramento State.Â
ABOUT LAST WEEK
The Matadors dropped a pair of tight decisions last week to slip to 1-4-1 on the season.
CSUN would fall by a 2-1 margin to Utah Tech last Thursday. All three goals in the match would come in the first 30 minutes of play and over a 21-minute span. The Trailblazers took a 1-0 lead in the ninth minute, only to see CSUN quickly erase the deficit in the 11th minute on a Cailey Jackson header off a service from Lia Peterson. Utah Tech though took the lead in the 30th minute and held on the rest of the way. The Trailblazers had a slim 14-13 lead in shots while holding a 6-2 edge in shots on goal.Â
The Matadors would dig an early hole in a 3-1 loss at San Diego last Sunday. USD scored twice in the first 15 minutes of play, leading by that margin until Jackson scored on a penalty kick in the 54th minute. CSUN outshot USD 16-5 in the second half but could not close the gap as the Toreros received an insurance goal in the 67th minute. Overall, the Matadors posted their most shots in a game since 2019 with 22 (nine on goal) while the Toreros had 11 shots (seven on goal).Â
JACKSON ON A ROLL
Senior forward Cailey Jackson hit the net in back-to-back matches last week, bringing her season total to three. Heading into this week's games, Jackson's three goals are tied for second in the Big West while she also ranks third in points recorded at seven.
